  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

On Jim's post of some of the Scarlet and Epic specs, he mentions that Epic will have Ramping and Time Lapse, but he doesn't put these under Scarlet. Will Scarlet feature ramping and Time Lapse? I really hope so because that'd suck if it didn't, especially with the 2/3" models.

No they will not, that's the primary difference between Scarlet and REDOne/Epic. There are less boards in the Scarlet, allowing it to be a smaller form factor.

I think people are missing the point of an entry level camera. If you put all the features requested into an entry level camera, it couldn't be an entry level camera anymore. That much being said I still don't like the 2/3 sensor. Still hoping for 4/3. The 2/3 will cost the end user more once they try to get optimum glass plus adapters to enhance DOF.

If you want to put optimum glass on a camera, I think that's also not an entry level camera. The B4 mount is an option. I think the 'entry level' version would use the Red lenses with their mount. B4 is just a bonus when you need to rent glass for something better. Not that you couldn't use it that way all the time.

I don't believe that ramping and timelapse functions need a large amount of cpu power. If Scarlet doesn't have these functions it will be because of product differation, not a hardware limitation.

In other words, you can be quite sure that Scarlet will get these functions eventually through a firmware update, RED won't put artificial limits on hardware just to up-sell. Or so I read somewhere, correct me if I'm wrong please.

Personally I would like to see a timelapse function. An easy way to do this would be very slow framerates, like 0.1 or 0.001. Can't see how that would be a problem, other than the fact that the specs state 1-120 fps, not 0-120. :sarcasm:

There is nothing entry level about Scarlet s35 or ff35 and they dont have ramping or timelapse either.

Time-Lapse

Time-Lapse

I would like to hope that time lapse will show up on scarlet.
It sounds like it is not a hardware issue, as said here.
I just hope they put it in there, since it is very important to my filmmaking...
There are many, many other specs that differentiate between the models.
Time lapse recording should not be one of them.
I don't consider it a high-end feature since mid-range video cameras had it for years...

I just don't see why they wouldn't allow ramping in the 3K Scarlet. These cameras are going to be a skating director's dream camera (I'm not into this type of filming, but I know people who do) and if it doesn't have ramping that'll be kind of a let down. One of the perks of the ability to shoot 120fps is ramping, so it'd suck not to have it.

Now as for the 5K and 6K Scarlet, I can understand. There's not as much of a point of ramping from 24fps to 60fps.

Given the fact that all brains will use the same controller module, I don't see why this feature could not be enabled on any module "capable" of doing so.

I am curious to see more about Scarlet's capabilities in still mode- we haven't heard anything about this as far as I know...
