Hi!

I am looking into purchasing Global Media Pro 190 Wh batteries.
I saw that other people are already using them with no problems at all so far. I know that the RED camera cannot show how much time is left when using other brands, but that's not so important to me - and besides, the batteries have a 4-level LED charge indicator.
My main reason to go for them are the lower price, bigger capacity and the fact that one can buy a relatively cheap 4-way charger that charges 4 batteries simultaneously.

Regarding capacity - Since a RED brick is 140 Wh and powers a normal RED configuration for about 90 minutes (more or less depending on the accessories) - I am hoping to get about 2h of life out of the 190 Wh one, or even more (see below).

Amazingly, someone has told me that the SWIT LiIon 160Wh battery runs the Red for approximately 2,5-3 hours, also in a normal configuration. They do cost quite a lot more, though... Can anyone provide how much time a Global Media Pro 190 Wh battery lasts, if he has already used one with RED? I'd much appreciate it. Due to the even larger capacity, I hope they can do at least the same.

P.S. Another note: the same person told me about the SWIT S-4000S Portable Battery PSU:

With four batteries on it, he got 10-11 hours of continuous run time without changing one single battery! I wonder if this device can work with other V-mount type batteries, including the Global Media Pro.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I purchased a few of the Li160S Lithium ion Battery 160WH and they will not run my camera. I get monitor flickering and inconsistent almost intermittent fan sounds at boot. The camera back menu window stays blank and software never loads. Tried many times, gave up, and have $900 in batteries collecting dust.

Those sounds like my Batteries4Broadcast batteries. If they do boot the camera, it says "body hot" on the back. What you need is one of the Dual V-Mount battery adapters. There's something in it that regulates the voltage and makes it work correctly with the RED. Personally, if someone knew what that was and could tell me, I would install it in my RED battery plate so I could use my batteries straight on the RED or with dual v-mount.

If anyone using Global Media Pro batteries, pls advise how these are performing and aan we charge Global Media Pro Batteries on RED charger.

Thanks

Well, this interesting topic, I am in Mainland China for shooting now,
also looking to get more information from any Red user who has been used the 190wh Global Battery, hopefully it will works for RED, than I can save the money for my option lens.

Looking to hear good news from you guys

Cheers

I´m using the Swit 160Wh battery. It works very well, but It runs my Red with EVF, CF module only a bit more then 2 hours (at approx. 18 degrees celsius).
I did pay for it the same like the Globalmediapro battery cost. Price for them changes a lot from on country to another. I bought them in England.
Cheers

I found these posts under various threads. It took me some time, but I think it gives a clear picture now about Global Media Pro batteries.

Brigham,
I have a Globalmediapro V-lock charger and it charges the RED batteries fine....no problems at all......
Paul

Yeah i have 5 Global Media pro batts with my RED, they work fine.

The only reason i'm going to get a couple is that i'm kinda getting sick of the just dropping out without warning.

But i must say...RED Batts 140wh US$450 each...GMP 160wh NZ$300...it's a hard bloody choice when you get so much more bang for your buck with GMP's...

I'm using the Global Media Pro 190a 's with a Anton Bauer / Red Lemo plate.

The Good:
1. Cheap 4 190's and 4 way Charger = $1400
2. Charger really is simultaneous...
3. Power taps built into the batteries.
4. Seems to Run the camera as long as the Red batt's.
5. Light in weight.

The Bad:
1. No time or percentage display in viewfinder
2. The company is in New Zealand and was not great in communicating shipping delays.

We're probably going to buy another set... maybe 90's for taking on planes and to have a spare charger.

Nice work, Joon. You Herlock Sholming again?

Get me a set when you come to Mumbai... btw, when are you expected?

I have 5 GMP batts and only the 90wh versions (last anywhere from 40mins to 1 hour). They work absolutely fine, the only issue is like all other 3rd party batts is that they do not give you a readout on the RED ONE. But, i have a Viewfactor origo switch which gives a perfect readout and lets me know when they are less than 5 minutes left:)

I found the Pro 190wh battery in Mainland China's about USD1050 - 1250 per set, they are including 2 190wh Lithium battery with Lcd display,
and 1 charger also including the Lcd display too,
so, I think I shall go with them!

Hi there,

We use GlobalMediaPro batteries for quite a few years now, never had any problems!
We use the 160 and 190 cells on Sony XDCAM HD PDW-F330, F350, PDW-700 and the RED camera!

absolutly worth spending !

Greetz,

I just got another batch of 2 190wh globalmediapros - but they turned out not to work on the R1. The display would light up, but nothing would happen. Other batteries would work fine. The batteries also worked fine on another (non-RED) camera. Turned out that the internal wiring of the globalmediapro had changed a bit. After some research and reverse-engineering, I found out that I had to cut one cable inside the batteries, and now everything works as it should.

If anyone else has these problems, I could post a more thorough description.

Oh, and I tried contacting Globalmediapro, but they did not bother replying.

I searched on globalmediapro.com but could not find these batteries. Donot know if I am looking in right place. Can someone please give me a link.

Thanks

Martin thanks for link.
But it is saying "PRODUCT NOT AVAILABLE".

If you get these batteries, be sure to pick up an Origo from Curt.

Matt and I did a few jobs with his GMP batteries where we relied only on the onboard voltage indicator. As soon as one light had been on for a while, we swapped the batteries. When we got Curt's Origo, the "green" voltage light was still on when only one voltage light was on at the battery... so we assumed that the Origo was somehow defective.

A job later, Matt had the idea to let the battery run into the ground. Sure enough, nearly an hour after only one light was on the voltage meter, the Origo lights started ticking down. About 15 minutes after the green light went out, the camera shut down.

Those puppies last a long time...

RED decided to invent their own standard for voltage metering. While it's nice to have a percentage, they unfortunately ignored the voltage standard used by every professional digital cinema, HD and SD camera ever built.

They'll have to fully support their current battery metering system with the new cameras, but I hope that they also adopt the industry standard as well.
