Petri, Elsie, RED Drives only have a 90-day warranty anyway. And buying used drives is always a crap shoot, whether buying a RED Drive or a desktop HDD.
I doubt RED will ever authorize anyone to put third-party components into a RED Drive housing to use with the camera. This has come up many times and always gets shot down. Reason is that such practices have already been done and caused problems. You may have all the best intentions in the world when you do it for your own use, but if that drive ever gets into general circulation, it could be a problem. There is also more going on here than RED simply locking out other media. The way the camera works with the media, they have to profile the media and build support for it within the camera firmware. Not all media performs up to spec or if it does, may not perform the same as other types and could require different access modes or data block sizes, etc.. to get the best performance.
Others have brought up the possibility of RED offering support for other kinds of media that may be fast enough -- SxS for example. I'm unaware of any SxS media that would be fast enough, but maybe I'm missing something. I also don't see RED building support for a proprietary format that needs to be licensed from a competitor...
