  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Do we know what the native ISO of the Dragon sensor is? This might be the determining factor for me in deciding which path to upgrade to, Scarlet Dragon or Epic-X. Lower light capability would be first on my list, followed by dynamic range and then high frame rate last. That's just me though.

RED hasn stated a native ISO, but have said a clean 2000 ISO.

from what I remember Red has stated that 'native ISO" is no longer really a valid concept and is a moot point. They seem to have stressed that the camera is as clean at 2000 as MX is at 800 and as such you can think of 2000 as 'native' but really there is no 'native' you can shoot at whatever ISO you want in that general range.
At least thats' what I remember them saying

Any order with a DRAGON sensor - EPIC or SCARLET, upgrade or new camera, gets the $4495 price on ROCKET-X.

Approximately how long will this deal last, Brent? For instance, I just put in for the Scarlet to EPIC-MX trade-in. When I opt for the Dragon sensor update sometime in the future, will I still be able to get the $4495 price on Rocket-X? The RED Store online states:

If you purchase an EPIC RED DRAGON upgrade, you may buy a RED ROCKET-X for $4,495. Simply add RED ROCKET-X to your cart and the discount will be automatically applied.

I opted for the Scarlet Dragon path. Most of my needs were already met with the Scarlet, and if I had any request on what I wanted in another camera it would be an increase in dynamic range, less noise and a little more resolution—looks like the Scarlet Dragon does that.

"native/clean", the terminology can get muddy and be subjective depending who you talk to. But, if Scarlet Dragon at 2000 iso is as clean as Scarlet-X at 800 iso, then it's Scarlet Dragon for me without a doubt. Thanks for the info.

Jarred, regarding the early adopter deal (for a pre aug 31st RED ONE order), does it only applies to an EPIC -> DRAGON EPIC upgrade or can it instead be used to do a SCARLET -> DRAGON SCARLET upgrade ?

What I hope now is that there will not be any raw compression limitation with scarlet-D at 5k as the price is not that far from the epic-D and as there is the major limitation of 6k and framerates already (which is totally fair).

Cheers for that brandon,

Regarding the DSMC fan upgrade kits...
If I'm going for the Scarlet Dragon upgrade should I select the 'Dragon fan' rather than the 'Scarlet fan' option?

Thanks

Good question. The fan is the same other than it's just grey instead of black if you choose the Scarlet option. Not sure why there isn't a Scarlet Dragon option. I'm assuming there will be at some point.

Ok cool, makes sense.
I actually think two-tone could look pretty bad-ass.

Final question (for the moment!!)...
I already have a Red Rocket, but it does slow down/crash sometimes.
I think I may go for the Red Rocket-x deal.
Can I then run BOTH the Red Rocket-x AND older Red Rocket simultaneously to get awesome R3D processing speed?

cheers

Should people who opted for scarlet-x -> epic-mx be nervous about closing of the possibility to up to dragon, or will the upgrade from Epic-X to Epic-D be available for years to come as the case is with RedOne M -> MX?

I would anticipate that it'll be offered for a reasonable amount of time. Maybe not "YEARS" to come, but perhaps a year if not more, depending on where they end up with future hardware and a lot of other factors. I don't think we have anything to worry about right now. I really trust RED.

First of Jarred i should apologies, on another thread i referred to RED as liars for dropping the scarlet upgrade program to the dragon sensor. I still don't completely agree with the way Red promote/ share information (but its not my company) bottom line is you have delivered 3 extremely amazing opportunities and i thank you for keeping to your word and once again I apologise.

I like so many have 1000's of questions but are taking a leap of faith which i'm sure will be rocky road but a rewarding one.

do you have the answers to these at present which would really put my mind at rest:

1. If we upgrade to Scarlet Dragon - will the current RR card have any problems dealing with new colour science/ 5K files from the dragon that mean the RRX card is an essential buy?
2. Do you have any idea when you will have the info on the field of view/ the actual crop from the dragon sensor at different resolutions?
3. i'm guessing this is the case but with the dragon will the older colour science's still be valid, can we still maintain our current workflows RG3 for example until the industry as in adobe and blackmagic are up to speed?

Thanks again Jarred,

Suresh

If I upgrade the fans I'm definitely going two-tone :)

RED hasn't confirmed whether or not you can use old and new rockets together. A couple people have asked. Probably too soon to say.

I saw in another thread (can't remember where exactly) that Dragon 6K is 1.2 crop, 5K is 1.3, 4K 1.6 etc... same as MX sensor.
