  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

I gotta say that meanwhile I order mine, I did the firmware upgrade and let me tell you that the new algorithm with the original fans are extremely quiet the first minutes...AMAZING!!!

Alain

I just got my fan kits. I can confirm that the View Factor top plate does work with the top fan. Have a shoot in 115 degree heat later in the week so they came just in time! I set my new fan to 100 percent and holy hell it moves some air.

Does the Epic have a top fan installed already?? Just got the camera but have no Idea. When I turn it on it just buzz due to the fan.

Both the Epic and Scarlet have 2 fans installed. A front and Top fan. The upgrade fans are only if you need something quieter.

When shipped the EPICs and Scarlets only have a front fan.
You can upgrade it to the new 'deeper' version.
You can also ADD a new Top Fan that fits in an empty spot on top that was meant to receive a fan one day.

I hope they are like the computer fans..very quiet =) I get the chain saw sound...my scarlet would come on and then hit a low so far the Epic stays on high. I need to learn more about this camera and spend time with it.

I doubt it, although it would be great. I really would like to see (hear) a side by side of camera without upgrade, and camera with upgrade. But not running at the same percentage of fan speed, but running at the same temperature consistently, and hearing the sound difference. If the fans are more efficient then its not a fair comparison to test the fan at the same speed. but sensor and brain temperature.

Wait..if I remove the top plate there's a slot for a top fan?? I wonder how much power both fans will drain from the battery.

Can't wait to hear from people that has both fans running....Details are needed before I order.

???? Where do you take that from????

Great point Solomon,

I've done extensive tests on heat temp with my FanPlate. Factual testing : TEMP / NOISE LEVEL / LENGHT OF TAKE is something very difficult to do. It's probably therefore that there is no benchmark done as you have to take in account those three factors or your test won't be efficient.

TEMP (core and room temp)
NOISE LEVEL (in dB, not Iphone app)
LENGHT OF TAKE (in recording mode using fixed fan speed)

Once I get the upgrade kit I'll test it side by side with our FanPlate.

saw pix of the top fan on red.com looks nice. Now I'm thinking due to the lower power of the fan to blow enough air through the camera and out of the vent on top. You would have to install the air flow kit to make up for removing the powerful noisy bottom fan.

Doh, you're right. Only has one front fan by default. I guess the plan all along was to have two fans because of the aux power port sitting on the top.

Exactly. Honestly, it doesn't need to be a perfect test, even a rough test would work fine, I just don't like the director and talent feeling they have to yell over my camera after takes. I just want to see roughly how quiet the camera can operate without overheating!! :D

Fan plate $690.00 ...RED KIT $450.00 RED would be the way to go for me.
