  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

has anyone with scarlet received theirs?
Just got an email that it should be shipping out shortly so I should have the full kit in a few days once its shipped. Very excited to get this upgrade. Will post up thoughts as soon as I get it

Would be great if anyone could do a sound test comparing the dB from the same distance.

Hs anyone tested front fan with view factor 15mm adapter?

EDIT EDIT Confirmed: The Viewfactor 15mm LWS bracket DOES work with the front fan!

EDITED TO ADD PHOTOS & DESCRIPTIONS.... (Photos taken with iPhone in somewhat dimly-lit room... forgive the quality)

So here's the top fan. I'm really impressed by this little piece of engineering! MUCH smaller than I expected, and very easy to install. Remove the two screws and little cover plate around the electrical contacts, drop the fan into the slot and re-install the screws.

To give you guys an idea of the APPROXIMATE position of the fan under the DSMC Tactical Top Plate, I drew some very rough lines. The yellow area indicates the bit of the plate that will interfere with the "hump" on the fan, and this area will need to be modified to make it fit.

The bottom fan after installation. This install was fairly easy, but BE CAREFUL OF THE TINY ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR!

Confirmed: The Viewfactor 15mm LWS bracket does NOT work with the front fan. The bottom right corner of the fan assembly makes the most contact with the 15mm rod bracket, and the left side makes contact ever so slightly. There does appear to be enough material on the corners of the fan assembly that they could be shaved down carefully to fit, removing approximately .5 to 1mm of material, however I am of course not suggesting that you do this... and if you do, it's absolutely at your own risk and would probably void any warranty on the fans. The other option might be to grind a small groove in the rod brackets, but this could present a problem of weakening the brackets.

I WILL POST PHOTOS OF THIS TONIGHT. Standby for an update to this post.

Well warranty for a piece of gear of 250$ if it can fit your investment and configuration is IMHO not a bad "risk" to take...

Does the fan make less noise than the original one at 25% (minimum) fan speed? Thanks

Pat

I honestly didn't compare them. I got home from a shoot today and my box had arrived, and I did the upgrade. I will say that the fans are nice and quiet when the camera is "idling" although I only ran it for a few minutes to check their operation after the install. The idea behind the addition of the top fan is that it is pulling air out of the top of the camera, instead of relying on the bottom fan to force it all through. Working together, they are definitely going to be more efficient, allowing for quieter (not to be mistaken with silent) operation.

I've read that the top fan only works when the camera is in an overheating situation. So is the top fan always on, regardless of the camera temp?

Can anyone confirm the top fan will work with the Viewfactor top plate?

-P

I will confirm the top fan plays nice with the WC top plate. For the front fan you will need to order the FAN FIXER from WC.

Thanks Bob! I inspected my top plate and assumed it would work because it appeared to have enough clearance but I'm glad you have tested it. I have not ordered the upgrade yet but plan to do so soon.

The top fan kicks in when it needs to. But to say only when "overheating" is not accurate, too extreme. So, depending on temp, it may be on right after boot, it may not be.

I'm going to buy both fans anyway, but with this knowledge, if you could only buy one fan, the front fan would be the better fan to get since its always on and quieter than the current front fan? Or is it better to get only the top fan because it comes on when its needed, and will help the front fan that is already there.

It is all user preference, really. We are just providing options of combinations you can use to suit your needs.

When you guys talk about the WC Top Plate, do you mean the "Easy Top X"?

yes, exactly that... and with the front fan compatibility we mean the support for the 15mm rod adapter usually :)

User preference?
I'd prefer you tell me what to expect. Would you share testing results and comparison new-old fan options?
I really appreciate RED is giving options, but I'd ask you to quantify the benefits.
Thanks.

Trevor, the asymmetrical meat as you say is probably due to misalignment of the bottom plate. Loosen the bottom screws and straighten it out.

Bob, right you are!!! I loosened the bolts holding the FMJ on the bottom of my camera, and slid the 15mm LWS bracket into place!

I will go back and re-edit my previous post, but just to be clear everyone, the Viewfactor FMJ 15mm LWS bracket DOES WORK with the new front fan!
