  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

Hey Jarred,

If I have an top plate from Element Technica and i am hoping with the recent merge of RED + Element that there will be some option for us to upgrade our ET/RED top plates to work with the new top fan?

Everything is looking good, EPIC is evolving.

It reminds me of the window of an old audio cassette tape.

The riser was required to hit "standard" 19mm height...just like it was before. thats why it was there. Unless of course you are using a Epic baseplate that already incorporates the riser, then you are doubling up :(

But regardless... I think you will be very happy with the new direction we headed. It is not just a slight tweak by changing lanes, but a complete U-turn, off the road into the ditch and back up the other side kinda change.

Whoa.

Keep talkin....

So stoked to hear this.... Now I have to start saving $ again...

Thanks Phil.

Against all of our Adult Supervision's guidance, here is a pic of the aforementioned new top plate that is coming.

Let us just pretend that is the only thing going on here :)

Incredibly cool. Let's do this. ...The car and the cam.

Top/Bottom 2.0 fan upgrade kit showed up at my door today. Cell phone snaps of the parts in the box and after installation attached. Haven't had time to work with the camera after upgrade yet, just installed and checked out basic operation.

Initial thoughts:
  • Go here to find installation instructions (from RED.com's download section.
  • Do not forget to upgrade your firmware to 4.0.12 (or whatever is most current when you read this)
  • Intalling bottom fan was a bit tricky. Had to get the fan positioned just so and use the provided spatula to guide the rubber fan bumpers inside the fan grill housing.
  • Top fan was a snap to install
  • Installation guide has grill/plate compatibility information on pg. 12 (for RED products). Plastic top scoop included in the upgrade kit, could get you by in case you have an incompatible top plate. It had the same part number as the Stage 2 top scoop that came with my Epic originally.
  • DSMC assault pack 15mm attachment fit back on after the upgraded bottom grill. Close fit, but it fit.
Initial impressions were that the "quiet" preset was exactly that. Not silent, but quiet. That's definitely better. Didn't have my sound equipment unpacked yet, so didn't have a chance to see how sound pickup though a mic sounds. Will try to get to that tonight, maybe I'll call it a justifiable break from finishing editing/post work I need to get turned around quickly for a client...

Thanks for that Mark!

until now RED GERMANY did not get their unit(s?) delivered from US it seems… I was told "next week maybe". If they get it I'll pay them a visit to take a look if it works with the Wooden_Camera top-plate and Wooden_Camera 15 front-rod bracket. Maybe others are able to test that out faster then me tho - every piece and bit of info is appreciated! :)

I like the note that we can trade in the top plate towards the 2.0. If we can get the 2.0 and then ship the 1.0 back, that'd be great as it avoids any downtime.

Much like to be had.

So, now that some people have installed them, how much quieter are the new fans?

Worth it to upgrade?

Thanks!
