  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

same question here but from Europe... when can we ship our tactical top plate back to RED to have it ready when the new fans are shipped ?
 
Shipping from the far flung ends of the earth (Australia) is probably too expensive for something like the Tactical plate if we have to use Fedex. Is this mod of the Red Tactical plate something you could do yourself with a Dremel at your own risk of course?
 
Looking forward to ordering a kit when it goes on sale. Not thrilled about having the top plate be out of commission for the few weeks for the mod, but this kit does looks great.

Took the dragon upgrade. Must get the dragon fan.

Using a Dremel will probably end up looking tacky.
If you are or have access to a machine shop, you can machine virtually the same pocket mod that RED will be doing. The only issue would be re-anodizing the part after the machining.
However, being in your part of the world, your local modification still might be less expensive than shipping to the USA.
 
I assume the machining is off the underside of the Tactical Plate and if this is correct "neatness" should not be an issue. I have also noticed that the bottom fan seems to protrude out the front of the camera likely fouling with my 15mm lightweight rod clamps. Sigh
 
I really hope it fits the 15mm rod mount I have... The view factor version has a decent space between
 
What this about needing to update the top plate for the top fan? I must not have seen anything at NAB, does anyone have pictures of the new fan setup on the Epic?

I have still some hope that they change the fans to make them fit without the need for modifications. As generous as this offer for a free modification is (only RED does this and its just unbelievable) i think it's probably only practicable if you're from the us.

We will have to send it to RED USA, i don't think RED Europe has some of those CNC-robots. ;)
So that will increase shipping costs (to RED and back to you), you know, RED prefers FedEx, that doesn't make things cheaper. Shipping costs could end up in the 100-150$ area. And then there are the customs, who will probably try to collect taxes and increase your waiting time, which is another factor on it's own.

Well, we could collect plates and send them together to RED to save shipping costs, but that will probably make things worse with customs. ;)

On the other hand, i'll probably not order the fans before i order my Scarlet-upgrade. Maybe i could just put the plate into the box, when RED requests me to send my Scarlet brain back for the upgrade-process (but that package would go to RED Europe, so i guess it wouldn't work).

+1 these news have been quite a bummer for me also (just thinking about the cost of sending the top plate and the customs troubles)

It's just a plate, not an expensive camera. Why not just send it using postal mail? Based on things I've read recently, it seems like any trouble you might have is exclusive to Germany.
