  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - RED SWITCHBLADE-M

If it hasn't entered production yet, this puppy looks like it'd really benefit from a lock switch!

I agree 100%.

However, I love the idea of this product.

Placed a order for one.

I don't understand. If we have a Side Handle already, why should we buy one? Apart from the weight difference.

Maybe I'm missing something :-)

I use the Side Handle a lot and I am very comfortable with it. Why should I replace it with this item?

I do agree, though, that options are always good! I'm just trying to wrap my head around the advantages of this new item.

Thanks!

It's an easy to use option to change settings when the camera is on somebody else's shoulder. Or you have the camera on a gimbal with no touchscreen attached and something else on the back.

You do not see it? It has far less buttons then the side handle so with this new module acctually makes it so that even a highly professional AC can handle the camera without setting a new white balance, zoom into 1:1 and/or turn on false colours 5 times back and forth... all when he was just going to change the iso for no apparent reason. So basically yes this thing makes the camera possible to operate not only by indy film people :)

Ha ha...amen to that Björn!

Thats exactly what I was thinking, a remote for twice the price without the remote. ; )
Or a side handle without the battery option.

This is Machined Aluminum. Not Cast. That might not matter to some.. but it makes a huge difference.

Personally, I think the Switchblade is going to a big deal. It will replace my Sidehandle and Remote all in one fell swoop. My camera will have a smaller profile, and will be easier to navigate for AC's who are not super RED familiar. I may not even need the Touch screen really, if you think about it.

This looks like very smart tech to me.

question: when you use the switchblade, can you operate the menus of the camera (watching on the LCD display while you are navigating) or just the basic settings on the OLED display?

You should probably elaborate on that if you want people to believe you.

Wow. I'll elaborate as I juggled one in my hand today for a while and asked many questions.

The Machined Aluminum comes from a single Billet that is forged or formed using continuous extrusion.

The Billet method yields a stronger material with a uniform grain pattern (which you can observe on the back side of the device) compared to casting which does not and appears courser to the eye (and you can bite into it even!).

This is common method these days on higher end products as billets can be ordered in bulk to the size specified and machined whenever a production run is deemed necessary.

Red is sort of all about this stuff in reality. There isn't a lot of half-assing on the durability front with accessories used on Red cameras. That's sort of the whole point because a lot of other manufactures do whip out half an ass often made of crushable plastic and slap that onto the side of something itching for the day to die in a glorious camera drop.

Cast parts can be stronger or weaker than machined parts. How you form the alloy has little to do with it's base strength. It is a misrepresentation to state that all products that are cast are somehow inferior to those that are machined. Machining parts makes sense where the quantities are low, the parts are simple geometry and the design might change. Once volume has grown to the 1000's of units then creating a die to cast the parts makes sense. All that said, I doubt that Switch Blade will ever be stressed to the point to see a difference in forming method or specific high grade alloy type for that matter.

Love it. AC's will love it.

Please add a lock switch. Please ship with a basic default configuration of buttons that all assistants from all over the world will be happy with.

Thank you. This solves a lot of my Assistant bitching!

Did you accidentally mean to call your multitool the Switchblade and this the Sidewinder? :)

I finally got a chance to look at this puppy on a computer screen instead of a phone. The assignable buttons will totally do the trick as a lock/unlock, just like they do on the touchscreen.

I'm so excited for this... it's a perfect solution.
