  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - DRAGONcolor and REDgamma 4

RG4

Texture of skin.

+) I can see positive bumps in brightness easily
+) My threshold before I can see dips in brightness is greater.

Looking at the jpegs - my view of why RG4 looks more 'real' is dynamic range of the blacks within the skin pigment.

DragonColor

Looking at JM's spectral plot and Phils supersaturated images - Huge changes (to my eyes)

Photos
RC3: The Yellow Jumped out of the screen at me. DC : Looks much 'better'

Spectral Plot
RG3: Blue saturation seems to 'unnaturally' peak 40% from left. DC looks bang on.
RG3: Red felt like there two saturated Peaks. DC red saturation 'seems' to match the orange before it.

Tricky Reds

I think these show it the best, it's not only so that the red channel is less at peak I think all 3 channels is, or you can turn it around and say no channel is starved. It makes great difference, it make great difference when you shoot ( what we just did ) ketchup commercial with red ketchup bottles against red background... then dragon and redgamma4 would be huge help. Both B and G was starving. While red was peaking... no good.

This will of course render much better skin tones at all light levels. It's does not matter much in the perfect exposure, but for everything else you got more preserved detail both in shadows and highlights. So yes it makes huge difference.

To be honest I'm having a difficult time finding a significant difference between these images - they almost look identical. I can see that the old color science renders skin tones a little more red and reds are more saturated in general, but that's about the only difference I can see. Anyone else agree?

Over all ...

Blacker Blacks, Whiter Whites ...

Magenta cast is History ! ...

Over all Balance of RGB is near perfect.

Now you can have everything you need to grade with at an optimum starting point.

What is tough is when Phil does these tests and posts them and then we all look at them on our MacBooks and in jpeg.... We cannot ask Phil to do even more and link the R3Ds to a server so we can all play in RCX.....

I suggest that once everyone gets the firmware loaded that they shoot and compare. Believe me Graeme is a master of color and when working on this asked me to judge some of these differences with jpegs and it is hard. But God Bless him for being the perfectionist he is and continuing to work on improving on something already great

I know this is a fast moving thread, and I posted it once ealrier, but for those who don't see much difference in more subtle tonality, have a look at my colour spectrum comparison:

John, this is most helpful... especially regarding the blacks and reds. In the past I've always opened everything in Red Log Film when viewing in RCX. I'll look very hard at leaving footage in RC/RG 4 if I get the shot right. Maybe we are nearing the point of in-camera grading. '-)

How much of a nerd am I that the feature I'm most excited about is multiple calibration slots??

WOO!

looks like the new RCX can now create export preset with ADD enabled... and REDline is now also ADD aware... That and DragonColor is good news for the lucky ones with a Dragon Camera (and some free time) to do super high quality exports.

Thanks John,

The blue channel got a lot of work in RC4. Nicer subtile blue evolution.

Pat

Can you also playback with the 4Kmodule for on set viewing??
Best regards
Robert

I would have put up .R3Ds, but I have none of this REDCODE material with me here in Vegas.

But I totally agree. My web optimized .jpgs only tell part of the story. Load up REDCINE-X Pro and see for yourself.

I think REDgamma 4 is great. But I have a little problem with the program. Nothing happens when I hit the m (you should se the as shot there). When releasing the m (with the mouse) I can se that it blinks something. Anyone else get this?

"Low Compression Burst mode probably is a better description".. apologies if that came across differently.
