  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MATTEBOX: What's your preference?

The bright tangerine looks fantastic. Nr 1 on my list currently. Ketch what accesories have you ordered for it. I have some trouble figuring out what package I should actually buy for it. Also hard to find places to purchase it in Eurpe.

You can buy the BrightTangerine direct from the company. Any probs getting in touch mail me. I cannot recomend them highly enough it is a fantastic piece of kit.

I got the Strummer fully loaded which has now replaced the MB28... ;)

O'Connor stated their O-Box could use 18mm lens. But it doesn't work with 5x6 filters in the tray. May be at 26mm you frame out the black sides. What do you do when you want to shoot a Tokina 11-16mm in full sun? What matte-box do you use then?

I've used the O'Box with two 4x5.65's as wide as 18. For Tokina 11-16 LMB 5 should cover.

I use the O Box WM for the Tokina 11-16mm. It works at 4K, but 5K things get tricky.

This Bright Tangerine box is growing on me. Had my hands on one not long ago and liked what I saw.

I think I'm about to buy a full Strummer Kit. Looks very nice indeed.

Yeah it's a killer matte box. I just bought the Viv as well. Love Bright Tangerine!

I just pulled the trigger on a full strummer kit and 3 stage msifit kit.
I also have vocas 450's which i think are brilliant, they have some great features, the internal adjustable eyebrows are great, and they are very solid. A lot of the long running soaps here in UK run with vocas.
BTW, i think i saw someone saying they had trouble buying in Europe, Gecko-Cam have been very good, they have full price lists, just mail them.

Thanks everybody for all these comments.
I have to say that i'm very interested by the bright tangerine.
Could somebody tell me what's the widest lens you can put with the strummer fully loaded like Ketch's picture with no vignetting ? I'm particulary interested to know if the RPP 18mm would vignette (@ 5K full frame) and if so, if it would vignette with only 2 stage filter?
Thanks a lot

You can use all 3 stages and not vignette with a s35 14mm lens. In Full Frame (5KFF) you can go as wide as a 17mm before you vignette. Your 18mm lens will vignette before the mattebox does.

Thanks Matt, checking it out now.

Will,
Check out Curt Pairs review of the Bright Tangerine Viv on Vimeo. It is currently the widest viewing angle available in a matte box on the market. You can use a 14mm lens in s35 with the 4x5.65 filter trays installed.

Matt, have you used the O-Box? Wondering what your thoughts are on the unit vs the BT gear.

contact Curt, he will get you a quote and can get you a matte box anywhere in the world. He is one of BT's distributors.

I'm not Ketch but I purchased the 3 stage Strummer, top and side flags, all the step down rings, hard mattes to block out even more flares, the top accessory attachment which has 3/8th's inch holes on top to mount a cine tape or other accessories, and I got the 19mm adapter. I absolutely love mine! Definitely send Curt an email and he can build you a custom kit so you can add or subtract items to meet a budget.

I also just ordered a Viv for those light weight run and gun situations. The Viv is BT's competitor to the O'Connor Obox.

Trevor, you always have the great gear that is difficult to find initially. First is was the View Factor battery plate, now this. What magazine are you using man!!! I need to see your whole system! :) A lot of REDUSERS could benefit from a few pictures of your setup.

Love my Bright Tangerine VIV

I don't understand how you are doing this. Do you shoot at 5k?

My setup is RPZ 18-50mm, 5k widescreen with 4x5.65 filters and I have to zoom in to 30mm before the sides of the filter trays are framed out. Hard to understand. Not 4x4 filters, the 4x5.6 inch.

Where are the O'Connor reps when you need em?

Haha, naw, I haven't gotten any special treatment or early gear. I feel that I've made good buying decisions based on research, reputation of the manufacturers and my own personal preferences. I've posted my rig a few times, it's nothing super special, but here ya go :)

If you have any questions feel free to let me know man!

I think I figured it out. I've been using the bellows on the O-Box and it puts me back quite a bit from the 4x5.65 filter trays.

In the video Matt linked, Curt goes over this same issue with the BT VIV at 24mm.

So do I really need to use a bellows to keep light out? How do I get closer to the filters without letting light in the back end, or with filters in, prevent light from penetrating into the back end, bouncing off the filter, then into the lens, killing my shot?

Strummer = Swing away version but no clamp on?
VIV = Non Swing? With Clamp on?

hahaha I'm sure it is. The Strummer beats the Arri line-up hands down.
