  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MATTEBOX: What's your preference?

are they going to add a swing away option for the OBox? I know they talked about it a while back. They would sell more units if that became an option.

Personally in the field weight is an issue and wind. Therefore I use Cinetactics, Matteblox HD System.

It probably is better for us Canon ?Nikon lens freaks though!

There's always the 3rd party swing away adapters, but a dedicated oconnor solution would be awesome

Both of those clamp on directly to the lens correct?

I was inclined toward a swing away, but I may be wrong about that, do you have a reason you prefer these to a swing away setup?

I prefer the clamp-on. A.) Weight is significantly reduced B.) No light leakage/consistent "seal" around the lens and C.) Convenience. My CP.2s are all the same size, so it takes a single ring to fit to all 5 lenses. With the Redrock or anything else that uses donuts, every time you change a lens (notably lenses that aren't the same physical size/diameter) you're having to adjust the positioning of the mattebox, and/or choose different "donuts" to fit to the lens. I like the simple setup. Mattebox comes off, lens comes off, lens goes on, mattebox goes on. Takes a couple of seconds more than a swing away.... and it's a lot simpler IMO. Just depends on your specific gear obviously.

Here's the Genus on my Scarlet

RED PRO MB as clip on, have not found anything that gets even close to the usefulness of this MB Fantastic Job RED!!

ARRI MB28, still the absolute best as the bad boy fully loaded as on rods swing away 3 filter tray with 138mm Rotating Circular Polarizer filter.

Hey Ketch, have you ever found a solution for using the Red Mattebox with Canon lenses? I know they have a clamp for rails in the works which is the right way to do it but I know if there was a another way you would be the guy, BTW I have used the wind machine I purchased from you numerous times and am very happy with it:) Thanks Again.

As cool as 3rd party can be I'd rather have an official Oconnor swing away thats built specifically for the Obox. I hope they come out with something soon and I'd pick it up right away.

I think I'm sold on the o-box thanks for the input guys. I'm going to look into a swing away adapter as well. Seems really versatile though, clamp option, 15mm option, and swing away from 3rd party.

Does anyone know if it needs a 15mm riser in order to work with most lenses on scarlet, looks like it would be low from pictures...

If they do, they need a swing away like the Arri MB20 or the RedRock. Swing aways like the chrosziel has for the Academy Mattebox are worthless if you have lenses like the RED Pro Primes where half of the lenses are one length and the other are a different length.

I agree with Philipe on this one. You can't go wrong with the o-box it is as versatile as Red DSMC system. Has alot of great mounting points on the matte box for accessories. The o-grips are amazing with it as well.

I also recommend the o-box because it is EXTREMELY durable.

You can check out this video of my setup to get an idea on how it all comes together.

Great video Jacob- Thanks for sharing!

Eric,

Are you guys planning a swing away option for the Obox?

Personally I believe you would sell many more units if that was an option as not everyone needs a clamp on and would rather have a swing away.

I agree 110%. Being able to slide the mattebox on the swing away rods makes it so much more versatile.

A couple tapped mounts on the unit would be cool too. You could then put your cinetape readout there to get it in a good spot and away from the sidehandle.

Thanks for the compliments regarding the TLS matte boxes. We do our best to make them as rugged as possible enabling them to withstand the rigours of everyday use. As for the wild animal crushing the shade, maybe we need to extend our endurance testing.
Just to clarify - TLS do some prototyping for Genus and small, initial batch work too. We design and manufacture a lot of broadcast and film equipment, some of which is taken up by Genus for larger batch manufacture in China with the full blessing of TLS. They keep a close eye on quality and do most of the distributing of those goods under the Genus name. Colin, TLS

Hi Matt,

There are currently no plans for a swing-away option for the O-Box. These mechanisms tend to be big, bulky and expensive. To operate properly with a bellows ring they need to not only swing away, but also provide relief from the lens/ bellows connection. Without that relief you put yourself in a situation where all day you are fussing around with rings falling off the mattebox. The O-Box was designed to be what it is; a compact lightweight mattebox with an incredible feature set and price point.

Regarding the tapped points; there is an aluminum cheese stick incorporated into the top flag bracket loaded with ¼ and 3/8 threaded holes. Cine Tape, monitors, on-board lights…all not a problem mounted to the O-Box.

vocas 450. Build quality is superb, customer service is great. Mount it on rods or clip on. The internal adjustable eyebrows are a dream.

Arri lightweight is what we use. Got the red matte box aswell but I find it to be to big as a clamp on. It's more of a swing away kind of matte box, but so far the rod mount for it is missing in the web shop.

What is really nice about the arri one is the front boards that you just click in for different focal lengths which I find a lot faster than fiddling with flags and such. And it is what it's called, really light weight and also small and does not build to much forward which is super for closeup moco work.

Both of those look pretty sweet, I like that they are both swing away. I'm just eyeballing it here, but it looks to me like both of those (along with others) would need a riser for the 15mm mount in order for the mattebox to line up properly with the lense on a scarlet or epic...any experience with this?

They are the same mattebox, I just posted a link to 2 stores who sell them.

According to the video the mattebox has a vertical adjustment so you could raise/lower the unit to fit the lens.

I had never seen or heard of these before until I checked out 16x9inc. Their studio FF looks great as well. http://16x9inc.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=728
