  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Hi there! I'm new around here, and ow boy, this must be the biggest camera forum I've ever came across.

Ok, I saw in a video earlier today that Red and partners will be releasing Komodo attachment modules/accessories, my question is, are there already any plans for Red, or some partner, to release an XLR audio input module? I know the camera is able to record audio since it does have 2 tiny mics for scratch audio, and a 3.5mm input, but yeah, having a module with XLR powered inputs would be very nice. Just the thoughts of not needing to carry an external audio recorder will make things so much better for the small run and gun situations.

Also RF glass support, I know it was said it was coming, but I just wonder if it will be present at the official release date, when the camera will be available to everyone.

Hope someone can answer this. Thank you folks!

Ok, so there are options here, but this is where I feel there might need to be some push on Red's side. I'm all for opening up the infrastructure and getting more standardized mounts, gear and stuff incorporated into the workflow, but since it's not cutting edge new stuff that will be around for some time, it is a bit worrisome that we are marching into a new camera system with side gear that is "somewhat" moving out. I really don't care as long as we have clear purchase options available, but hunting them down instead of just going to the local photography store to buy them, kind of negates the purpose of the gear being open like this. If the gear can't be open in a way that it's available everywhere and around the corner, just go proprietary instead. It becomes a half-game of opening up supporting gear but because it's old standards it still becomes obsolete in a very short amount of time.

I still think Red should have or link to or whatever, create the possibility to buy the necessary stuff for Komodo. What happens if a year from now, the supporting gear is downright discontinued? Tech moves fast, but only a year is not a viable life cycle of something like a Komodo. Just wished Red would offer batteries and memory cards like they used to. I've never cared for memory cards and other gear being proprietary when it comes to Red, I've found it much easier to just get all you need from Red and be covered for shoots. So if the new approach of a much more open system means that we buy a new system that is pretty much old in terms of side gear, then please just give us the opportunity to buy all we need from the Red store directly. Makes no sense not to have such options available for the upcoming release.

Chrostoffer the Canon batteries are nice as it makes the camera very small but they alsi give zero power outputs for follow focus, vide transmitters, screens etc. So I think best is to get somthing like the core vlock module and use vlock batteries with D tap and only have the canon batteries when smallest posdible option is whats wanted, on gimbals drones etc where you normally also have another power source for aks.

The dual canon battery mount is actually quite sturdy and works well for quick mounting for a vlock adapter or what ever is wanted. And there will likly be quite a few 3rd part suppliers that start to sell batteries that fit when the demand goes up even more / when the black komodos ship. So I think its not much to worry about.

Also its not so important to see remaining battery life on a camera where you have dual slots and the camera drains one battery at the time. Simply put two batteries on and when one goes dead you got 1,5 h to replace it before the second one lights out.

There are a few battery manufacturers that have added power out on these kind of brick batteries, Swit for one. I don't think they do that for this BP range though and i don't know if that is even possible (7.4v out?). I have a Swit Sony NP battery with a DC out which i can run a remote monitor and the paralinx receiver from just the one battery... Most peripherals don't need 14.4v and can take the lower voltages so maybe dtap isn't essential or maybe you can have a dtap at 7v?

cheers
Paul

Yes follow focus and such normally want 14V. A USB out on the BP batteries would go a long way, to keep phone / screen charged. But yes would need to have a up converter in there to do 14V that they usually dont want to do.

On Set - Commercial Shoot // RED Komodo Journey 003

"Had a great time after being invited on set by Victor Manggunio (Director) and Alex Javier (Producer), fellow Stormtrooper owners. The commercial was being shot on a RED Komodo, and I shot these few behind-the-scenes clips on my Komodo as well."

I am loving the fact that ore accessories are coming out as I wait for my KOMODO. Easier to find the perfect compact rig.

Can't wait for the email to order mine :)

Does anyone know what happens if side gear like memory cards and batteries goes out of stock? Heard that the approved batteries aren’t made anymore by Canon, so where do we get them?

I can tell you for certain this is not true. Canon has been manufacturing (although slowly) batteries for several months. Ive received several backorders directly from Canon.
I think it will just take time to catch up with demand. If you want batteries you need to place an order...they will come. I received two just last week directly from Canon (via my dealer).

Admittedly I haven't read through this whole thread, but instead just skimmed a few pages back. Although I had an opportunity to purchase a storm trooper I decided to wait for the production model to be released, but does anyone have a read on when that will be?

Production is starting slowly as I'm writing this.
You can subscribe on red.com/komodo to be notified when they go officially on sale.
If I remember correctly, around end of 2020/january 2021 is the timeframe.

Can't speak for all equipment but my motors (PDMovie) and Video (Paralinx) all accept 7-20v. Teradek seems the same as well (The RT stuff)

USB C would be good (it's got a higher voltage than the normal 5v) but just a standard barrel connector would be okay (that's what the swit has and it's easy to make up or get a power cable made for them)

cheers

Question regarding the email out from Shawn end of last week, I put my name down in that production unit list. Do I need to order one from the shop site to retain my place in line or do I need to do something via that initial email?

Cheers, huge for the team to get these things out in numbers to the wild and just in time for the beginning of winter here in British Columbia.

I wonder which should I get:

CANON DROP-IN FILTER MOUNT ADAPTER EF-
or
REVOLTA RF/EF

Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance
