Got the Laowa 9mm RF lens for the Komodo. Really awesome to have a super compact superwide lens for this thing. You do get slight vignetting with the 9mm on this sensor but definitely not a dealbreaker.

Can you post a frame grab of the vignetting?

New Work Dropped today. 100% Komodo!!!

Very special project for me.

Not only getting to work with one of the most talented and popular musicians in prog rock / fusion Antoine Fafard.
But also on a project with multi award winning prog rock drummer Gavin Harrison.
Truly an honor to support this new project.

Does anyone know what happens if side gear like memory cards and batteries goes out of stock? Heard that the approved batteries aren’t made anymore by Canon, so where do we get them?

Bob -- That's a Hassy finder. How'd you do it ? Could you put a 45º Hassy finder on ? Extremely interested in
a very light weight, small Komodo rig & Hassy finders could be a solution.

I can’t speak to the validity of that rumor, but that’s one of the pitfalls of one manufacturer using another manufacturers specific/proprietary piece of equipment that they don’t control the manufacture of, instead of using an industry standard(also a pitfall of any piece of equipment using “proprietary” batteries). The good news is, Gold Mount and V-mounts are easily adapted. You’ll just have to sacrifice weight and size to use them. And others are having varied luck with third-party batteries.

With all of the cameras still out there in the wild that use those batteries, you would think that Canon wouldn’t be discontinuing them, but they have been on back-order status at places like B&H for a while, now. Of course the back-order could just be related to CV manufacturing interruptions, but it would kind of be a “Canon thing” to do, too.

But this sounds really bad for a camera that is not even released yet. If Canon stops making these batteries then Red needs to make their own or redesign the back of Komodo, which is impossible now that everything is locked down.

It’s sad that there aren’t much answers from Red anymore and potential issues like these seem to be left to chance? To use a V-mount solution because we might not be able to even buy batteries for the camera is very bad. Especially since used batteries means potential degradation of their performance compared to new ones.

Can anyone confirm that the batteries Komodo was designed for is teaching end of life? And what is Reds response to this?

The pandemic disrupted the supply chain majorly on this front from what I can tell and 3rd party batteries "work", though aren't chipped which means they don't show charge info on the LCD. I agree that if there is an actual discontinuation it would be nice for RED to make a chipped version to transfer battery info to camera.

At the moment Canon still makes:

BP-955
BP-975

The only BP series I know Canon discontinued making is the very compact and small in capacity BP-915 (discontinued long ago). You can still find 3rd parties who manufacturer this tinier battery and it does get you around 40 minutes per battery.

The alternative BP stuff I tested was the super cheap stuff because I was curious if they could even start the camera and could be suitable for backup power in a pinch, but I when I get a chance to test the Swit, Hedbox, Blueshape, Jupio, Fxlion BP-9 series stuff I'm certain those are better options and might even be chipped. I just don't know at the moment. A lot of 3rd parties make BP-9 series.

Most of the issue is very specific vendors not getting new stock during the pandemic, a common theme for a lot of gear actually that slowly is improving. For instance B&H is out of stock (back ordered in NY), but Filmtools has them in stock and recently so (CA). I've seen Komodo owners checkout local electronic stores and found some as can be seen in the Facebook group.

Ok, so there are options here, but this is where I feel there might need to be some push on Red's side. I'm all for opening up the infrastructure and getting more standardized mounts, gear and stuff incorporated into the workflow, but since it's not cutting edge new stuff that will be around for some time, it is a bit worrisome that we are marching into a new camera system with side gear that is "somewhat" moving out. I really don't care as long as we have clear purchase options available, but hunting them down instead of just going to the local photography store to buy them, kind of negates the purpose of the gear being open like this. If the gear can't be open in a way that it's available everywhere and around the corner, just go proprietary instead. It becomes a half-game of opening up supporting gear but because it's old standards it still becomes obsolete in a very short amount of time.

I still think Red should have or link to or whatever, create the possibility to buy the necessary stuff for Komodo. What happens if a year from now, the supporting gear is downright discontinued? Tech moves fast, but only a year is not a viable life cycle of something like a Komodo. Just wished Red would offer batteries and memory cards like they used to. I've never cared for memory cards and other gear being proprietary when it comes to Red, I've found it much easier to just get all you need from Red and be covered for shoots. So if the new approach of a much more open system means that we buy a new system that is pretty much old in terms of side gear, then please just give us the opportunity to buy all we need from the Red store directly. Makes no sense not to have such options available for the upcoming release.
