  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Just watched a review on the control ring. Very slick....

Canon really did a great job with the RF program. The adapters are stellar.. the lenses are insane. the 85mm 1.2 rf is my new favorite lens.

Super excited for the rf control ring adapter, but really wish they released a PL adapter, guess I'll be getting the Metabones... That is, unless RED will be making a PL to RF adapter, because I could be patient and wait for that!

One drawback for the new RF lenses is no variable nd behind them which makes using EF so appealing, however, hearing the 85 RF is incredible makes me very happy that I ordered it anyways, now they need to do a 24mm RF 1.2...

I like the idea of a behind the lens filter holder, but don’t care for variable ND filters.

the metabones PL adapter is actually pretty well done. And I know a few more companies that have them in the pipeline so we probably dont need to make one.

Agree with the ND but at least they have the adapter with variable ND or normal ND's in it when you do use EF.. and it will probably take some time for more RF native lenses to happen anyways. There obviously is a huge amount of awesome EF glass out there already. The RF adapter FEELS really great too. Great mechanics.

Im pretty sure the 24mm is coming next year if not early 2021. I need that 70-200mm too. And a Macro :)

Oh yes, some macro and maybe tilt shift RF lenses would be very welcome. My EOS R package arrives friday so I am very excited for what the future holds! Can't wait to get my hands on that 85mm now! :D

My only two questions are:

1) any functional difference in operation with using EF + adapter versus RF native on Komodo in terms of lens data, focusing, etc

2) when? (ha!)

1. Potentially... massive. Not so much in focusing.. as that is really on the camera side but in terms of Lens data yes. the RF mount not only has more communication pins than the EF, but the protocol is almost twice as fast with a way bigger data lane. So you can do things like lens correction and offsets immediately instead of as a post process. It also has the capability of more granular focus data as frame rates don't overwhelm the data lane. Not really an issue on Komodo.. since its not a high frame rate camera, but for the future... that eliminates a huge metadata bottleneck.

2. When it's done :)

I wonder if you or Kippertie or whoever could implement a better ND solution between RF and EF, like electronic ND or Revolva style swappable glass

BM has higher frame rates,

This makes me sad, it was the most important feature for me. I think that BM's 50 fps limit is the very minimum in order to maximize most shooting scenarios. Even if this is aimed for gimbal work, just think of the numerous gimbal + slomo shoots that happen. Not to mention that we won't be able to use features like HDRx when the fps limit is lower than 50.

As the specs aren't fully locked down, I'd still urge to get to at least 50 fps. If Komodo only manages to get 25 or 30 fps maximum it might be a pass for me. Getting the best possible picture over the competitor's still very much competent pictures becomes irrelevant if you can't shoot the necessary speeds many projects require. Higher than 50 fps rarely happen, it becomes a diminishing returns in most cases, but the many benefits of at least 50 fps become apparent to anyone who has slightly more diversity in projects than just one type.

Maybe there will be at least 60fps @ 5k S35 for 4k finish. 6k will be nice for stills, normal video 24-30 fps and timelapse, but for 4k video finish I don’t see it making much difference over 5k other than slightly larger fov.

If it should be good for gimball and action it should really do 50fps. Anything with sports needs 50fps.

For the curious I did look at a couple of the other available RF > PL adapters and ended up with the Metabones as well. It's pretty robust and has the likely needed lens support mount if you're using heavier glass in the 2+lb range. I'll be doing some tests with the RF and seeing how it handles glass basically in 2lb gaps. I believe it can handle 4lb primes just fine on it's own, but the question really is with adapters and other accessories where is the wiggle and connection issues.

On the flip side, you can make it silly compact and lightweight as well, which is where I think a lot of the fun of Komodo is to be had.

Other RED cameras already exist that do 50fps in 6K including the one you already own...

I think we should push for 60fps, certain areas around the world are pushing Fairly hard for 60 FPS as a normal Television frame rate.

Also seems like the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM Lens would make a good gimbal combo for even the single handle gimbals as if combined with Komodo it should work with any of the DSLR size gimbals, in a sort of “normal” perspective lens for S35

..Its first and foremost for our existing customers. And then probably anyone who shoots a lot of action. And then perhaps it fits into an entirely new market.

Sounds like a complimentary camera to something like my DSMC2 Helium...like maybe, my camera can do 60fps at 8k FF but has some shutter issues when shooting action. So I can pair it with a Komodo when I’m shooting a fast paced scene because the new sensor design allows it to do so without the same shutter issues...I think I’m seeing the picture.

...hmm.

I believe that in terms of fps Komodo will be like the Epic-W.
At full res will be capped at 30fps and going to lower res will be a little more aligned with the other dsmc2 fps. Like 4k cropped at 120fps.

Pure speculation now but if the pixel pitch is 4micron will have a size of 24.5mm wide. If it's 5micron will have 30.7mm wide. That would mean, if 4k has a higher frame rate, that for 4micron will be close to micro 4/3 size and of 5micron close to academy size. Neither are bad, IMO. And with the option to add a speedbooster with ef mount or similar ffd.

If you could somehow squeeze a downsampled 4K 60p out of Komodo that would be amazing. Crossing fingers for us HFR capture and delivery guys :))

That is my Gimbal lens right now with my EOS R. Great budget prime!

Their most common pixel size has been 5 micron, which is what seems most likely for Komodo given what has been hinted by Jarred and Soderbergh about the sensor size. S35+ @ 6k.
