  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

June Update

Oh come on, you very well know the A7r sensor is capable of more than 5FPS at full res. It's only limited by the electronics around it. I'm not completely sure how bit depth affects sensor yield 100x either.

Sony's 100MP 645 sensors is appearantly cheaper and easier to make than 8K VV....

Have you seen the Dynamic range on those Sonys? Ahhh. Little overexposed and you're f...ed.

I never knew there were so many sensor design experts that browsed RU.

Thanks for the updates Jarred & Brent! Initial optimism had me think I could shoot a personal project this past weekend with the new S-W...but ya know what, we shot it with my current cam and it turned out great! Really reinforced the "tell the story" concept. Going to happily keep shooting and waiting to have a more exciting tool in my hand.

I'm a little confused but all the folks out there who are so impatient to get an 8K VV Weapon.

Is everyone going to use their still glass and make epic VFX features. I would love to trade my Carbon 6K in for the 8K VV but even with work on Transformers I can wait until Jarred has enough sensors. I might suggest that Red would love to have a higher sensor yield so can we all not just except what Jarred has explained over and over again about the difficulty making that size sensor and not second guess him.
I mean it appears that Panavision is more patient than some of the people on RU

Funy. RED was created by aggressively questioning the status quo and asking "can it be better, faster, cheaper?" . . . yet as RED believers we are expected to not embody that philosophy? ;-)

I wonder if people with Ferraris on order go on Ferrari internet forums and ask why they can't make V8's as quickly as Ford.

Can't agree more. I'm' doing commercials mainly, and though I can't wait to have the 8k VV, this is not the mendatory gear to shoot movies. People don't have to be that hasty.
I'm feeling like an old man at 33 because when the Red one came in, we had to wait... a long time. But we never lost trust. And I'm feeling some of the hastier one are somewhat loosing their trust in Red. I personnaly don't like that, they earn our trust. Not only about delivery schedule, about sensors tech, and tech in general.

When Jarred said something about sensors, or Graeme, or anyone in the red team, redusers should show a bit of respect. And now I'm feeling like a fanboy... oh man....

The 8K VVA sounds very interesting, especially if it is meant for the WMg also. But I am confused why is it called 8K VVA if it is 6.7K. Shouldn't it be 6.7K VVA? And what are the other spherical formats available on this sensor?

If you want to buy a new ferrari... there is currently a 2 1/2 year waiting list. Just for perspective :)

I'd forgotten about these, but when I was involved with the astronomy club back on the east coast, someone told me about their AstroPhysics telescope... the wait was so long that he'd forgotten that he'd ordered it when they said it was ready for him. I don't know whether or not they're still in business, but back then they were worth more used than new because of the wait time.

In some cases, Ferrari has a better upgrade program than Red. :) They usually want first right to purchase when you sell yours. I had a friend who had his for one year and then wanted another car. He got 100% of his purchase price back. They are hoping you will buy another Ferrari. He went for a McLaren instead. His wife has a pink Bentley.

My first project is a new doc. I am using Otus still lenses. At 6K HD, and the 85mm Otus, I had a nice distance between camera and subject. They will be closer now for the same FOV, but with the new fan system in DSMC2, that is not a problem. I remember being a TA at a Reducation where they still had RED ONEs. I had been on an EPIC for a while, so it was painful to go back to RED ONE. Same is kind of true now for EPIC. After using Weapon, EPIC seems so old now. LOL

Waiting for the 8KVV is not like waiting for the RED ONE where I had no camera to work with. I have been getting some wonderful HDR images from the Weapon. HDR as in Dolby Vision / HDR10, not the still stuff or HDRx. I am plenty busy, so it will come when it comes. I am happy that Phil was able to use one otherwise we would not have the wonderful Forged short to drool over while we wait. I image the wait is harder for Phil since he shot with one. :)

You have no idea. Jarred told me as much though back in January. He said "once you shoot it you'll want more and I apologize for that".

He was right.

The net results of Forged have all been very positive. Everybody seems to really enjoy that shoot and it's been instrumental in showcasing that footage to clients and financiers for a few upcoming things.

Additionally during that shoot and some efforts a bit before it (thanks to RED) allowed me to tinker and experiment with a host of optics that hopefully have helped everybody from GotG V.2 to all of us get a bit more informed about glass and 8K Dragon.

I now have 5 projects up in the air who are interested in 8K, literally and figuratively. 2 of which are my own things.

I can't stress how excited I am about the resolution and format size.

The additional excitement I have is towards gearing up for 8K productions, general workflow, and one other thing I'm developing.

The main excitement is all about the the story, the visuals, and exploring the format to it's fullest potential.

With the Panavision deal Jim and Jarred's legacy is cemented. They could walk away from the gane today with pride and respect. For most of us lifetime legacy is still a work in progress.

My interest in 8K is not to shoot Fast 'n Furious 14 . . . it's to help memorialize the rapididly diminishing biodiversity and other subjects that will be soon gone for future generations to see. The Great Barrier Reef got like 75% bleached (dead) in the past 2 years. Would have like to have seen it before it died.

It's hard for humans to value what they have never experienced. RED 8K is a timeless vehicle toward that and perhaps positive change. Sure you can shoot it with whatever cam is available but most of these places are a once in a lifetime chance. Like going to the Moon - you don't use your iPhone to record the walk.

Please do what you can RED to bring this important tool to us little people. Everything changes

I'm pretty far back in the line so I won't be bruised edge (bleeding edge will be tentpole movies) but getting the 8k sensor in the hands of people like Stacey, Blair, Zeb, et al,... that is important. Sure the PV and Xeno-morph will garner the attention, but the queue people are who will produce the content that expands the acceptance.

When I do get my 8k upgrade, I'm hoping the market will have been primed to the point where no distributor will ask, "Why 8k?

I am actually taking the Japanese approach as in I think the 8K VV sensor will deliver the best 4K / UHD we have seen. When Red makes a 16K sensor, then I will worry about 8K delivery. ;-)

At SID there was a 17.3" 8K (well, 7680x4320) laptop display. LG also had a 31.5" 7680x4320 computer display. That's a bit small. As it is, I am thikning about moving from the 31" LG 4K to the 43" Dell UHD display. I run 1:1 on the LG and text is a tad small, but I love the real estate for development. Here is an IHS PPT with details from SID.
