  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

June Update

With the Panavision deal Jim and Jarred's legacy is cemented. They could walk away from the gane today with pride and respect. For most of us lifetime legacy is still a work in progress.

My interest in 8K is not to shoot Fast 'n Furious 14 . . . it's to help memorialize the rapididly diminishing biodiversity and other subjects that will be soon gone for future generations to see. The Great Barrier Reef got like 75% bleached (dead) in the past 2 years. Would have like to have seen it before it died.

It's hard for humans to value what they have never experienced. RED 8K is a timeless vehicle toward that and perhaps positive change. Sure you can shoot it with whatever cam is available but most of these places are a once in a lifetime chance. Like going to the Moon - you don't use your iPhone to record the walk.

Please do what you can RED to bring this important tool to us little people. Everything changes

Nice words Zeb, I believe the 8k in your hands will go a long long way.

"O and I know some of you Epic MX folks are patiently awaiting for your DSCM2 upgrade path... We still need a bit more time. It will be very special in a small but big way."

Music to my ears.

I am actually taking the Japanese approach as in I think the 8K VV sensor will deliver the best 4K / UHD we have seen. When Red makes a 16K sensor, then I will worry about 8K delivery. ;-)

At SID there was a 17.3" 8K (well, 7680x4320) laptop display. LG also had a 31.5" 7680x4320 computer display. That's a bit small. As it is, I am thikning about moving from the 31" LG 4K to the 43" Dell UHD display. I run 1:1 on the LG and text is a tad small, but I love the rel-estate for development. Here is an IHS PPT with details from SID.

Hey RED... disregard what I said in an earlier post and skip Stacey. '-)

Just joking Stacey... I'm sure you will archive in 8k, at least.

I think it's important that people don't complain about 8K or become a google certified sensor expert unless they actually have one on order. Seems the people who have one on order are the patient ones around here.

Also think about 8K in terms of actual use. It's not just the next "K". It's huge. In pixels size and in media size so you really only need it if your productions are going to be full length features shown on big screens. The hard drive space that it's gonna take up is big. This isn't like the Scarlet for short films and stuff. The 8K is geared towards big budget productions and as such the quality has to be spot on hence the wait.

Levi, most of us have been dealing with large file sizes since the R-1. This is not our first goat ropin'.

Not only that but the price of admission to 8k was $60,000, even with the early queue discount. Not an impulse buy. '-)

Oh absolutely. I've been using RED since the R1 as well and each K gets bigger in file size. That's what I was referring too. And definitely not an impulse buy and not one that I'll tap into for awhile myself. I'm just not sure all the people who are complaining about the wait are buying one.

Yes, you have a point. There are probably a lot of people waiting to buy, especially after the Panavision news. And I think the "8k" VVA has attracted more buyers still. So with those as your audience, your remarks are spot on.

But I disagree that they are the loudest complainers. '-)

UHD 8K 17.3" and 31.5" both sound "excellent" to me :)

Can´t wait for new allocations or July news.....

I plan to keep it at full resolution until final delivery. One will be UHD BD, which is 3840x2160, and the other is unknown at this time.

I don't agree that it will only be full length features shown on big screens. Phil's Forged video has been viewed on all screen sizes from small to large. Best part of 8K, is if you want to go small, you can. Just change the resolution and shoot at 6K, 5K , 4K or any K. It is all DSMC2 cameras rolled into one. :)

While evaluating the Sony 75" 940C (2015 model) HDR capability this week, I was seeing detail that I could not see while actually shooting. A clip I shot last year on Epic Dragon, of the Seattle skyline, has so much fine detail that you could tell there was a Seahawks game going on in the stadium much further away. Does go to your point about really appreciating the difference with a larger screen. That was at 6K HD. I can't wait to re-shoot that at 8K HD.

Phil, I have a question for you. Maybe your new website can tell me this, but I will ask you here. The FOV at 6K HD with the 85mm Otus. What focal length will I need for the same FOV at 8K HD? This is where I wish the next Otus is around 100mm.

I think all this chaos/insanity - amounts of orders, busy production lines, more people joining the RED family - is one of the best things not only for RED, but for us as well who are already in this family.

Maybe now we'll finally not have to explain to those in-experienced ad agencies, directors, producers, clientele - why we shoot RED, how easy it is, and that these cams deliver the best image on the planet!

So while production delays can be frusrating, these times are good times indeed!

Well said!!

I now have 5 projects up in the air who are interested in 8K, literally and figuratively. 2 of which are my own things.

Phil you and I are in the same boat. I have clients with even deposits down for 8K shoots this year. Exciting times! Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Praying and hoping!

Praying and hoping!

I have an Scarlet W order that was placed Early Jan... I have a shoot in Italy in about a month..... was so hoping to have it before I leave... :frown5:

Not mad... just disappointed.. .. I guess all good things are worth waiting for!

Jacob, is the attraction to 8k it's dof or its resolution or both? Will projects deliver full width of the frame?

Very exciting news about the Epic MX path. I've been contemplating selling our Epic-M and just keeping our Dragon.
After receiving our Raven, I would love to go all DSMC2. Love the new form factor, but wouldn't mind a few more Ks;-)

You might see if there is someone in your area that already has the camera and see if you can make a deal. e.g. If they can let you use their camera for this job, then offer them your camera for use in the future where they might need another camera for a multi camera shoot. I have done this before and simply required the proper insurance to make sure everything is covered.

I'm in a similar boat here.. thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to try it!
