  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - GPU Build REDCINE-X Beta 21

Not seeing much of an improvement at all using the R9 280x... is this just because it's a relatively new card or am I doing something wrong?

We don't have an R9 280x here in the office yet. From what I've read on it though, it's the same chipset that's in the 7950/7970 rebranded. I'm also guessing that you're running on Windows here. And if you go into the System tab of the Preferences, it probably lists "Tahiti" as the GPU. If that's the case, we discovered an issue with the OpenCL driver on Windows that causes us to not get anywhere near the full speed the cards are capable of. The problem has been reported and verified by AMD, but unfortunately they've given us no ETA on when the fix will be made generally available. So the only solution right now is to be patient and wait for AMD to release their fix.

I'm on 12 core MacPro with a Rocket, AJA Kona3G, nVidia K5000 running Mavericks/RCXP 20 release build and cannot get viewer onto 2nd monitor (DP to DVI).

Since I had a Rocket I didn't plan to go RCXP 21 beta, does 20 not support Mavericks?

Cheers - #19

Thanks for the report. It looks to be an issue with mavericks and affects both build 20 and 21. We're looking into it.

Hey Grant the amd 290x is actually new and not Tahiti it's called Hawaii. Not sure if the bug still pertains since sounds like it but I know lots of people want to get it given the specs and price point. I to want to see what it can do as others are also, if contemplating new gpu. Any info u can find out he great.

Kenshin,

Thanks for the info. It's something we'll have to look into.

Ah I thought it was kind of strange that it was showing up as Tahiti in that menu instead of R9 200 series like it does most other places on the computer. Glad to hear that you and AMD are both aware of the issue -- hopefully the fix comes out soon, the card is a monster on everything else. Can't wait for the full potential. Thanks for the quick response Grant -- keep up the great work over there.

Rob can you provide early transcoding benchmarks with this setup? I take that you are running 2 Titans and no Rocket. How long does it take to transcode say 256GB of R3D footage or 512GB in hours?

thanks

I'd also love to hear some feedback on dual Titans' transcode speeds.

Currently it only uses 1 GPU, and it seems the --devicename setting does not work and it always uses the first OpenCl device reported.

(dont have 4 Rockets for Comparison)

Currently it takes 4 simultaneous opencl encodes to max out a GTX680

Truncating down to 10bits seems to cause a big speed hit for unknown reasons:

adding --bitDepth 16 for 16bit dpx vs default 10bit increases speed, except gpu is maxed quicker.

Summary: GTX680 about half the speed of red rocket at 5K FF 16bit.

Christopher,

Converting to 10 bit requires extra operations, thats why it takes a bit longer.

As for your REDline problem, you might need to up how much memory REDline is using. It won't matter how many rockets you have if it can only process so many jobs at once due to a memory limitation. Experiment with the --maxMemory command.

Try 8 gigs? --maxMemory 8589934592

Thanks,
David

Have you noticed enabling "Video on Second Monitor" not work in your mavericks? I tried both Standard and Beta versions on 10.9 and the option does not work. OSX(10.9) added some improvements to 2 monitor setups, unfortunately they hinder with the function. Red?

Thanks for the new update, I now have 2nd monitor function working on my hackintosh(Mavericks)

Hackintosh with Quadro K4000 - installed the Nvidia CUDA update - and it's working like a charm.

Mac pro 10.7.5
2,8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB
Blackmagic studio2

Only output 720 via HDMI???? not 1080!
Video resolution very bad for color
Any idea?
thanks!

What geekbench scores are both of you getting? What processor Ed?

Has someone compared the sw only decoding with GPU decoding quality-wise?
Are the files processed by redcine different if gpu accellerated like the files processed via a rocket are?
Or are they the same bit per bit?
thanks!
