  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Working mainly telly, the non 16:9 formats are nice, but do create a lot of extra work crop'ing in post...

I wish for:

5k 16:9
4k 16:9
2k 16:9
and dare I say 1080 and 720?
I guess I dare not, but I can think it silently... :)

omg yes please!

at least let me copy/paste crop settings only, or batch centre-crop 16:9 to all clips in bin without affecting other metadata....

But I would by FAR prefer to get the framing right @ once....

I say we all go 2:1 and leave this whole HD compromise behind us.

Highest framerates
easy on the eyes
geometrically correct

I believe 5K 16:9 is not technically possible due the dimensions of the sensor…hmmm I will be back on that.

Hi Guys

I started a thread on a similar topic a while ago (see bellow). That said I have tweaked our workflow and by makimg sure we fit to height everything on set all our rushes are 16:9 when prcoessed. We all have difffernet workflows so I was wondering is it just people doing native editing that are finding this dificult?

thanks

Michael

This is not a demand to burden Red with (during what must be a very busy time) but a question for the forum and a declaration of interest.

Basically I would like to see a new resolution added. If this has been covered and Red has said something definitive I apologise.

For my own jobs (and definitely for anyone hiring my cameras) I would like to see a 24mm(ish) wide on the chip 16:9 mode.

Why:

1) So we may use smaller and cheaper Matt-boxes with common wide angle lenses (for example LMB 15 with 3 stages, the MMB1 and the O-box). We have 16mm UPs and 16-42 DPs and both demand matte-boxes that are big and heavy. I don't want to burden my cameras with a big mattbox all the time and at the moment unless I drop to 4kHD the above doesn't cover (I checked the LMB 15 and a other Reduser member had a look at the other 2)

2) For the possibility to offer a S35 16:9 frame with 100fps..... If I have this wrong I apologise but my calculations suggest that between 23.5 and 24mm would allow 100fps.

3) a generous look around... I used to love Red 1's look around.

4) I simply want my lenses to be a bit closer to what I was getting out of them on film ... (less important but still something)

5) I sometimes don't want to mess about with special crops in RedcineX so as to extract a 16:9 frame and at the moment I have to do this a fair bit.

Anyone else with the same idea?

Don't get me wrong I do love the S35+ modes ... and there are times it really adds but sometimes I just want an easy 16:9 life.

thanks

Michael L

PS it would also work better for the 16-42's in our Pulsar

@ Christian

Shure, not, but full height 4800 x 2700 would still be excellent.
Today I have done a lot of wide stuff, having to hit th 5k choice a lot of times to get as much as possible out of the wider lenses.
Love the option. Wish it was a 16:9 ratio in there, too

On R1 there was a 4k 16:9 modus.
Made life simpler when we had to frame up from 4khd

Gunleik, I agree with you, 4800x2700 will be perfect.

Here is what Red said regarding 5K16:9

Not possible as the Mysterium-X sensor is 1.9 aspect... so 5120 x 2700 is as tall as 5K record mode can be...

.. we could do 4K 16:9 (4096 x 2304), but in practice 4K HD (3840 x 2160) is a better fit for TV workflows.

Personally I like 5K WS (5120 x 2160) - which is "scope" cinema aspect, but I can crop out a "TV" aspect.

batch apply a crop setting (all clip in bins) works very well here with RCX PRO without touching look, audio or user metadata... or I did not understand what you mean by "without affecting other metadata...". [on a related subject but not about framing... I'm sure you also know we can apply only a WB, gamma space or other look settings without affecting ISO or the rest by clicking 'edit.." then "look setup" after creating one)

I'm sorry, but I am to understand that HD isn't 16:9 it's 1:78:1. When you shoot in 16:9 and trans code to pro res or other HD file type you loss the edges of your frame. You should shoot in 4K HD or quad HD. These setting scale to 1080 perfectly.

huh?

HD is 1920/1080=16/9

+1 for 4800:2700
