  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want my 16:9

+1, dont really understand why its not possible. From the 2:1 you can throw away the left and right till it matches 16:9, like the frameguide is now, the firmware could be tweaked not to record those areas...? Also a darkening around the fameguides like
on the alexa would also be really nice, and easier to operate.

This would be great in conjunction with an uncropped SDI output for use with the PIX240 and other recorders...

I say we all go 2:1 and leave this whole HD compromise behind us.

Highest framerates
easy on the eyes
geometrically correct
:)
David

Thats what Im doing :)

Then I can crop any which way at the end. :)))

EDIT: But then again, if you don't do your own post, then it becomes a pain not to have 16:9. Completely understand, especially when you have no post control.
Yes, bring on 16:9.

Im sure its just around the corner.

I'm sorry, but I am to understand that HD isn't 16:9 it's 1:78:1. When you shoot in 16:9 and trans code to pro res or other HD file type you loss the edges of your frame. You should shoot in 4K HD or quad HD. These setting scale to 1080 perfectly.

Isn't that the same? my calc says 16/9=1.77777777777778

and 1920/1080=1.77777777777778

or 1.78 if you round up.

2:1... Would love that David. We're still shooting 4:3 safe on my shows...Total drag.

at least let me copy/paste crop settings only, or batch centre-crop 16:9 to all clips in bin without affecting other metadata....

But I would by FAR prefer to get the framing right @ once....

I'm with you on the 4800x2700.

But in RCX Pro, you can save a crop setting and apply it to a whole bin. I do that all the time (or selected clips if you want). That, combined with a frame line on the monitor works pretty well.

I wish for:

5k 16:9
4k 16:9
2k 16:9
and dare I say 1080 and 720?
I guess I dare not, but I can think it silently... :)

Funny how badly I want your last wish to come before anything else. Scaled..

Shoot with the 4KHD setting that's exactly what you want 3840 x 2160 which is 16:9 and 4 times as large as 1920 x 1080

Nope, that is not exactly what I want.

Added rez for downsampling for certain shots is one reason, needing to go wider is a second, stills is a third.

@ the cropping
I am aware of that. Bad wording

In the "old" tools you had a batch "crop to height/crop to width" in the export presets.
That was pretty sweet...

Cheers!

I believe 5K 16:9 is not technically possible due the dimensions of the sensor…hmmm I will be back on that.

Of course it's possible - you just reduce (not increase) whatever side you want to fit the proportions.

As usual I 100% agree with Gunleik. But, really i just want the viewer to show me a 16:9 crop as a preview, but then record extra pixels anyway that I can throw away or use as needed in post.

Your thinking is right, but the end result would be 4800x2700; slightly smaller than 5K resolution if your definition of 5K is 5,000 horizontal pixels. It's semantics, really. The point is we need a 16:9 mode which maximizes the area of the sensor... not a 4K compromise (and that's what both of you are saying). :)

You can already set up a 16:9 view grid and of course crop in post, but I think what Gunleik is asking for is a native 16:9 recording mode so he doesn't have to do any extra cropping or reframing in post. Sometimes extra room to play can be desirable but not always. Having the option of native recording at the size you want to finish without having to take a resolution hit would be awfully nice. :)

Yes. That is what we want (and deserve) :).

+ 1 for a max 16:9 camera setting. Some times the 5K full frame format confuses directors and when I have done quick batch job with no cropping and they see the black upp and donwn in frame they get worried for a minute.

+1

And am I dumb or blind, but it looks to me that with Epic I have lost my look around area. You know - the area what can be 50% gray and where I could see the professional boom operator hanging mic. True?

If the Epic is to stay competitive with other camera systems like the F65, Alexa etc then it needs a 16:9 mode that maximizes the 5k sensor area. The smoother we can make the workflow the easier it is going to be to convince producers and directors that the Epic is a viable solution. As far as the vibe on the street goes everyone is just loving the Alexa, producers and directors alike. Not to mention DPs... Dean Semler has heard great things about it, Roger Deakins is shooting on it. Come on red hurry up here!!!

As usual I disagree with Mark, albeit very respectfully. I think it's very useful to see how 16:9 cropping will affect framing right in the viewfinder/LCD., to see the balance of graphic energy, and so on. Yes I'd also like to keep those extra pixels for post if needed later, but I want an always-on preview of the later crop. The grid is a bit non-optimal as it doesn't preview what things will feel like after they are cropped in a vivid manner, and it results in teh intended image being zoomed out in what is already often a very small display. Now we resort to masking tape over the LCD.

I very much also miss the old 16:9 "High 4K" from Red. It was a nice crop, that used the best part of any given lens without being too narrow.

Again, ideally we would record in 5K 2:1 for max post reframing latitude, but have a crop in both metadata, and clearly zoomed in within the LCD while shooting. In other words, it would be great to record 5K but "with clearly defined 4K 16:9, or 4.8K 16:9 intention".

As for Alexa, it seems to appeal to an older crowd, and the Epic/Red a younger crowd. Older people are more often reticent about computer technology and new ways of doing things, younger people less often. I have also noticed that the university graduate crowd embraces Epic a lot more than those who are self-taught and do not have a university degree. These are not absolutes and there are many exceptions, but it's a strong tendency and reveals a technological generation gap that is present in many aspects of life, not just production.

It depends on the people. I'd consider John Schwartzman a solid old-school film guy, and he embraced the Red Epic pretty well on Amazing Spiderman. And a lot of 20-something people I run into are shooting documentaries and modest-budgeted projects on DSLRs. Maybe this will change with the Scarlet, but I'm not the first to observe that here in LA, there's kind of a general trend among indie people to "race to the bottom" in terms of money and picture quality.
