  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx footage...

If so, how would the Scarlet differ? It's all in the data rates in which the computer in the camera can process. Unfortunately, this most likely will mean Scarlet won't see it.

Well, relative to 3K, Scarlet 2/3" has as much power as the Epic. In fact, at its maximum resolution Scarlet 2/3" can run faster framerates than the Epic. As for Scarlet S35, it is debatable, if indeed bandwidth / data rates is the limiting factor here. Perhaps a 3K/4K crop?

Second-Curtain Sync

Second-Curtain Sync

Thinking more: If the idea of reading the sensor twice during the exposure is correct, that means a second-curtain-sync look is not possible. At the end of the exposure, any pixel that is going to clip has clipped already. It's already saturated with photons and must be reset before it can be read again.

Time to queue up Nitzer Ebb's track "Getting Closer".

edit: Álex's photo really highlighted (ahem) what the RED team has achieved. Fantastic stuff!

It's this place, right?

A challenge, really:

You held the lights but your people look pretty dark! What happens when you expose for the people? :)

Added note: Sorry... I thought you were being sarcastic. That : looked like a ? when I 1st read? it... I need to slow up my scanning and actually pay attention. (or get glasses)

Wow! I'm officially impressed.
Even if you take a lousy screengrab from the mov file and play around with it a bit, it easily grades to Kodachrome/Technicolor looks.
Really love that warm organic feel you can do here.
Looks like a filmmakers dream came true.
Can´t wait to get my hands on this.

Frank

P.S. And yeah, I hope the Sacarlet can do - at least - some of that magic .

The jury is still out on Scarlet and HDR but it just does not have the processing power of an EPIC.

I have to wonder if Scarlet owners would prefer HDR in their cameras if they had to pay extra for it. We could up the processing power by adding boards but that will cost money and I'm not sure if Scarlet buyers will go for it. Some feedback on this would be helpful on another thread in the Scarlet section of reduser. Given the change in development path, board costs, an additional ASIC and "stuff", we are probably looking at an additional $1000 more or less.

If we did this, Scarlet could have both EasyHDR at 30fps and HDRx to 60fps.

Just thinking out loud here...

Someone want to start a thread there? It should be good for a lively debate.

I'll pay extra!
No question there.

Jim,
I Love what you are doing here. I tried to explain this to my father and he just looked at me and said... "Well, it sounds like Red knows what they are doing! And its a good thing, cause I sure don't!"
I say, Keep pushing the industry. Keep shutting people up. And keep doing EXACTLY what you are doing.

And maybe get that scarlet out sooner than later too so I don't spend my savings on something else... JK

One question though... Can scarlet get hdr but at a lower resolution (like 3k) instead of adding cost?
Thanks,
Kellan - LA

You gotta be kidding. An Extra $1000 for more dynamic range than an Alexa and I can still buy 15 Scarlets with lens for the same price! I'm in :)

I can't see anyone buying a scarlet without HDR.

Oh, the slippery slope...

Well, any natural grade will reduce the DR, though it's all there since I applied a S curve for luma.

Anyway, what it shows is the flexibility you got to create the image you want. I've keyed the skin tones to make them more orange than the background. That'd have been difficult in a low dynamic range image, since the tones would vary more wildly depending on the light they got.
