I don't know why, but tonight I started to think about great films that stood on their own, but easily could have had sequels made for profit... but for some reason or other, a sequel was never released. (which would have ruined the original masterpiece.)

What films can you think of that a sequel (or prequel) was never made and looking back, you think that was for the best? (and please explain why).

To start things off, I'll go with E.T.

A great film, told from the perspective of a young boy. The ending had E.T. leave Earth saying "I'll be right here", as he blasted off in his spaceship.

This one stands out to me as a picture that qualifies in the T.G.T.N.M.A.S. category. :-)

(Thank God They Never Made a Sequel).

You could probably name any movie based on a true story here, like JFK, Shindler's List, Amistad... Munich.

JFK? Really? JFK? "In a world where everything is out of control, one man is back for revenge. Kennedy. This time, it's personal. And he's ticked".

In Hollywood, ANYTHING is possible and unfortunately will probably be made into a sequel for the bucks. Lack of taste knows no bounds.

i have ss`s treatment for et2....happy it doesnt came alive

The Matrix. Well, that is a movie they should have NEVER made a sequel to.

I've thought that for ages as well - if you watch the original not only is it fresh, exciting and obviously one of the most influential movies of the last 20 years it just doesnt need a sequel.

And actually I do want to see that sequel to JFK. A CGI Kennedy, just imagine that. Only done like Jar Jar Binks - "mesa got a headache" etc.

blade runner - great story telling and great pics

My first thought - that open ended ending was just begging some moron exec to make a sequel.

Glad they decided a 4k restoration and re-release was a better idea. It's pristine, btw, if you haven't seen it. Lets you see how tough pulling focus on anamorphic is (lots of noses and ears in focus instead of eyes).
