  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol - power fool DSMC camera control

Just to confirm, can you view a video feed through Foolcontrol for OSX while using either the Offhollywood Hot Link or Hot Box R/S? Or does the video feed need to go over a direct wired Ethernet connection?

Hello Burke

RED CONTROL PROTOCOL does not send any image thru wifi nor thru ethernet connection. For now, video goes out only on HDMI and SDI outputs.

Thus, the only way to get a video feed on foolcontrol OS X is thru the use a wired or wireless video into a BlackMagic mini monitor (or other PCI or thunderbolt BM devices).

Best

I'll ask again, ANY news on any sort of hand wheel control for use with foolcontrol?
Also, any news of RT Motion integration which was talked about?

Hi Jake

Hardware does take much more time than software to be created and put to market...
Several dolutions are still in the work but nothing ready for announcement yet.

I was showing some iris / focus knobs at NAB but that was also some prototype and was working without any app...

Will be post here when there is something ready for any official announcement.

I finally got around to buying a cable to try this tool out as it looks great. Is there some trick to the trial mode though? I got just long enough to figure out how to focus and then got locked out. Fifteen minutes later -- with no internet access due to the direct connect, and with Foolcontrol open the whole time -- still no ability to use the program. I reset FC and then waited another fifteen minutes, still no way to use it. This seems like a bad way to introduce buyers to a product. I'd suggest a 5-day, one-time trial period or even 30-days, which is more the industry standard I believe. Right now I have wasted an hour trying to deal with this including a post to RU to see if this is normal. I know the answer is going to be "it's so awesome just buy it" but I want to test it with my lenses before committing.

Hi

Sorry for the restricted demo mode. Yes the app needs to stay opened for the trial to reset and I will look into making this trial period last a bit more in future updates

in the mean time... I can generate some temporary / expiring licenses to test foolcontrol for a few days.

Shoot me an email.

It looks like maybe the 15-minute clock resets each time the camera connect icon is clicked. The reason I say that is when I kept checking for the timeout, it would never timeout -- I just kept getting the 15-minute warning. When I left FC alone though on the 15-minute warning page, I came back later and it was operational again.

The temp license will do the trick, thanks!

Thanks Med

I would double check how it works right now and make it smoother / easier for tester in the next revision :-)
As I said I can always make a temp license for testing deeper.

And thanks to all the recent people who purchased Mac and iOs versions and thanks to everyone at RED for helping pushing this solution so everyone gets a chance to know it exists and deploy it on set.

Mikael:

I haven't read the whole thread, so hope this isn't redundant. Does the universal license allow you to control multiple cameras? We are working on a multi camera shoot in the next few weeks, using scarlets and epics on remote pan and tilts.

Thanks, and thanks for creating this capability.

Hello Michael

Technically the app is mono camera centric (connect to one camera, set it up, save a preset if needed and connect to the others and re-apply the settings for example)...

That said you can also duplicate the app and tun several instance on the same mac. Besides cluttering the screen with several windows it works fine as long as all cameras are on the same network.

I started working on a real multicam solution but that is still a bunch of weeks away...

Thanks. Multiple windows should work fine for this particular application.

Looking forward to your real multicam solution as well since I have 4K switcher and we are promoting the idea of 4k multicam production.

version 1.61 of foolcontrol OS X released
(free upgrade, download new built from foolcolor.net)

- added metadata SHOT number on supported cameras
- added OLPF type and value setting for DRAGONS
- under the hood enhancement for faster app loading, better camera discover over multi-interfaces, faster playback clip list loading etc

Hi, If I get a RED weapon/raven basic (i.e. no side handle controls or touch screen), but am using the hdmi for the screen - what's the minimal configuration I need to start controlling the camera through foolcontrol? (i.e. will a RAVEN brain "auto" connect to a foolcontrol to allow me to control a raven, or do i need to at minimum buy a red touch interface to get the connection going). What I'm getting at is, it would be nice that the "default" of the raven brain firmware connected to foolcontrol on camera startup. [at minimum if there was some type of configuration file i could copy onto the mini mag ... so the raven would talk foolcontrol]

You will need to establish a connection from the BUILT IN wifi from the weapon/raven. This works very much the way you connect to the wifi in your home but instead you tell your IPAD or Ihone to connect to the camera hence creating an independent wifi relationship. this is done by adjusting a few settings in the camera however, and you MAY need someone with a redtouch to get started. however once hooked up you only need the Brain + power to control the camera. I like to do this when i put the camera on Cars, not worth damaging the TouchScreen. Teradeck + Fool Control is an awesome combo. Also sometimes i do not operate the camera my self, Its nice to be able to work on the camera settings without breathing over my friends necks.

Hello

I am not sure the camera defaults to wifi enabled on ad hoc setup... in any case a special force preset could do that if needed.

OTOH altho foolcontrol can do a lot (including the same camera menu you have on a switchblade / sidekick) there are still a few stuff that are missing from RCP protocol in latest SDK (most notably black shading, custom keys setup and a few others maintenance settings). You can still access those using navigation keys in foolcontrol while watching your HDMI screen and I am confident soon everything will be available in foolcontrol UI or in the camera menu with newer SDK / camera FW....

but as of today I would always recommend to have some kind of easy access either to a RED touch screen or an hardwired menu navigation device (sidekick or upcoming mystery side handle)...
Just in case your iPhone battery is empty, or you do not have the wifi password and need to reset it, or simply wish to quickly change a setting not yet in the RCP protocol.

foolcontrol brings lots of stuff that may not be possible or as easy in the camera UI (precise focus control, setting and monitoring of most used stuff from a single page, easy presets save/recall for looks or camera settings, easy metadata ingest in slate etc...) and does allow remote start stop or changing of motion ND values when on a crane, in a water housing (via cable) or just on a gimbal with no screen attached but I personally would not yet recommend it as your ONLY way to control your camera.

I will post back once I can confirm if ad hoc wifi is enabled by default in new DSMC2 FW.

Thanks

EDIT : btw was speaking of iOS app for camera menu nav (sidekick menu).... the OS X app (discussed in this thread) does not have it yet.
FWIW it has other stuff not on iOS version like Lift Gamma Gain using tangent devices, video preview via thunderbolt/sdi...

Foolcontrol + HDMI monitor will get you a long way and it's basically the tool Ted was demoing years ago, but working and available. The RedMotePro.

I really look forward to the future developments of RCP.
It's a smart interface.
And Foolcontrol makes the best of it and is on top of the development.
