  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol for iPhone...

- No rack iris in foolcontrol yet, only setting values (1/3 or 1/4 stop depending on camera settings).

- Automated rack focus in foolcontrol uses smooth bezier curves for smooth start stop
- Ajustable knob rotation (1 to 10 turns) along with limits for min and max distance makes it super accurate (depending on your lens's motor precision... upcoming step less motors might be what we really need tho)
- User marks and preset marking disk always hold their focus distance whenever you change the limits or number of rotations.

Haven't tested optitron myself so cannot comment on this at all but the main advantage is that it is a real physical device with a turning knob and altho it may lack some cool virtual FF features an app can offer, your old school and professional ACs friends won't freak out when you show them your cool new FF system in an iPhone 6+ !

Me too so I can submit a new one with updated features once I get to play a bit with new stuff in FW 5.3 beta due tomorrow :-)

edit : send a email to list@foolcolor.net and I will let you know when it is released...

Thanks very much Mikael! As a fellow long-term enthusiast of how Apple works and whose own business ventures are as inspired by their priorities & perspectives as yours seem to be, I'm very much looking forward to being a part of the steps you continue to take with the app and other potential releases in the future :)

Posted in the 'recon' thread earlier on today...

foolcontrol for iOS is now available in the App Store
https://itunes.apple.com/app/foolcontrol/id888231700

If you are on iPad you will find it in the 'iPhone Apps'...
The iOS version has no limitation or lock to a particular camera model or PIN (it is just like the OS X 'universal' license)

Argh... Our camera is out for a feature for 10 more days. Really wanted to play with this. Happy to see it's out congrats to Mikael and all but it suck to not have a camera at this moment. New firmware, and fool control and all I can do is sit and roll my thumbs :)

Mikael, I'm trying to decide if/when pull the trigger on it on the Apple Store.
Do you confirm your plan to update the app to be universal with an iPad optimized version integrated?
I think that it's where the app will really shine and I'd like to be reassured the same app I can buy now
will be updated to be iPad native too...

Thanks!!!!

Honestly, I think an iPad is too big for this app and it's application. The iPhone and iPad mini retinas are perfect!! Love mine even on the iPhone 5.

Thanks Chris :-)

Tommaso, it is my plan to support iPad screen and iPhone 6/6+ natively too.
Right now it scales very well as it is mostly text so it looks sharp on any device. Redesigning it will allow more controls on a single screen but cannot tell yet how it will be exactly (might need more work than a simple shuffling of button positions and sizes).

At the moment, I am focused on adding new features that are not yet in the app (FW 5.3 features, full menu navigation audio, screen settings and guides, advanced stuff and full PL lens support). All these features will come as a free upgrade.

As I am also a cameraman and doing all this on my own I hope you'd unsterdand I cannot commit to any date or specifics for an iPad mini version. Not sure what the coming months will bring as many other projects are germinating now.

Just look at what it can do today and see if it is a useful tool for you. Keep in mind that even tho this is 'just zeros and ones' and 'very expensive for a phone app' what I am selling here goes fully toward supporting my effort and time spend as a developer. With what it can do in it's actual state it is most certainly a real bargain compared to any other accessory, cable or gear you may ever be able to buy for your RED !

hi mikael

not sure this if this has been covered but are you going to implement something like this http://www.touch-able.com/video-guide-5 that allows you to have a tailored simple page. The app is amazing but would be great when needed to have just what you need on screen e.g.

1. slider for focus
2. button's for iris up and down ( or slider )
3. button for toggling chosen focus assist
4. button for toggling chosen exposure assist
5. possibly a slider for audio levels

but thats just me

cheers

+1 for a simplified interface page with just the minimum of controls. A page like this would be great fo gimbal users.
1. Large Record button Possibly a smaller Pre- Record button
2. Iris open closed
3. Focus ring. ( or slider)
4. ISO up and down.

Yes altho everyone might have a different need I plan on doing a simple 'gimbal' page with minimum 'shooting mode' buttons down the road, keep your suggestion coming.

Suresh I like the modular app concept... might look into this for version 2 :-)

I can only get one lens to work with focus. Our 16-35mm. The rest are stuck on infinity. ANy tricks?

Hi jacob

What other lenses did you try (brand/model) ?
Do they work as AF lenses on the camera ? Some unrecognized lenses may need to be calibrated on camera first.
No special trick, as long as they are recognized by RED and are set to AF mode on the lens barrel...

Downloaded the app last night and also got our camera back from a months feature shoot. Can not wait, tomorrow I hopefully get some time to work some more on our own wifi solution if I get that to work it will be one of the coolest things since I first saw a DSMC module :)

i tried every single lens i have :)
Canon, Sigma and Tokina lenses - just like Mikael says, as long as camera recognizes the lens you'll be able to control it in Foolcontrol , but i had to to re-calibrate the lens first
Options>Lens Re-Init - takes 3 seconds

Yep Lens Re-init with every lens remount....works really well.

I've noticed some internal focus motors quieter and smoother than others ...thinking of starting a thread about it. Anyway IMO this is a new era in lens focus control. I'm suddenly reconsidering my manual lenses decisions in light of this app.
