  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol for iPhone...

Is it possible to engineer a focus knob for the Iphone? Or maybe a standalone one?
I mean, if you could strap on a knob that has a touch part for the virtual knob (like when using a pen on the iphone/ipad.
Then you can use a real knob instead of the virtual, which I find a bit hard to work with on a more critical shoot.

I encourage you to wait and try the knob before forging a real opinion about real life usability...

Putting a physical unit above might limit the most interresting features :
Colored focus marks visibility
Preset and user focus discs visibility
Smooth rack focus (you physical unit will loose marks)
Multi turns (same)
...

That said a fellow REDUser is testing a 3D printed prototype iPhone case including a knob made just for this so let's wait and see...

Jack . OS X version thread is here...

It is not for sale on the Mac App Store but it is a signed app. I do frequent updates and have different licenses (basically you don't have to pay full price if you are only going to use it with a single epic or scarlet)... Not easy or even possible to do this with App Store distribution.

sorry i meant iOS.. is this available yet?

Any plans to add a "sequencer" so moves. pulls and transitions can be automated? Any chance of piggybacking a control signal along with a duplex wireless video TX / RX (like Tomahawk or Bolt2000) and en / decoding with small hardware for extra long distance connection?

Very cool stuff...best of luck.

Thank you,

Hi Mikael. I've been thinking about knob options. A knob that attaches to the screen will be a bit annoying. Ideal solution for me would be a wired focus knob I can attach to the back or side of the phone. Did you manage to get the bluetooth knob (I think it was a Griffin Powermate) to communicate with your iOS app? Another option would be to rotate the entire iPhone - not sure if the gyro is precise/responsive enough but it may be worth a try.

Mikael,

a thought on the 'Apple Watch' as a controller - for run/stop as an additional control inout to the phone...any thoughts?

Hello guys

Will try to post soon and also reply to every PM and email I received but right now : too busy to respond quickly like usal.

I think a bluetooth knob would be the most convenient, but I would worry about lag and knob precision. I think a knob that could be connected to the lightning or headphone ports would be a much better way to go, but it gets me wondering if there is enough of a market to manufacture something like that affordably at the small quantities needed. Gyro sensors in the phone are not precise enough to do it by just turning or moving the phone. And even if they were, our human hands and arms are not really that precise either. The best focus pulls are going to come with precise and minimal movements applied to a physical knob or a slider or knob/ ring control on the touch screen.

+1 Epic with iPhone5 (soon 6)

Even though I'm not a fan of oversized phones or "phablets" I ordered an iPhone 6+ mostly because of this app... And for a couple things I'm working on, not R3D related, so that's kinda moot, but whatever...

I absolutely dislike non-tactile, virtual buttons/controls, but I'm gonna reserve judgement until I actually use FoolControl iOS in the field (because its circular, something tells me it won't be that bad).

Also, I'd think a cheap bluetooth knob would be best, assuming it's only a couple of feet away from the phone, no? I'd be even more interested in a handle-mounted finger-wheel style control too... That would almost have to be wireless lest you velcro the iOS device to the camera (which seems haggard).

Griffin bluetooth is crap... Only has 24 steps per turn whereas the usb one had 96... Works on mac version but haven't bothered try to link it to iPhone... They don't even have a sdk.

If you are at IBC come and try it in the RED booth it actually works quite well as is and everyone is loving it.

Will keep on exploring other options...

Same here. I ordered the iPhone 6+ specifically with this app in mind. Really looking forward to it!
You guys are so full of s**t ;-)
you ordered the iphone 6+ because you want it and Mikaels app is a good excuse haha.
Congrats Mikael- Apple should cut you in on it (not that they ever will the greedy corporate bastards ;-)

Have you considered using a 3D Connexion Wireless Spacemouse with the Lightning to USB Adapter?

You could also pretty easily replicate a FIZ controller with phidgets.

Ok here is the first working prototype.
All the measurements were made for iphone 5c (my girlfriends phone). Than i decided to by an ipod touch and had to use cardboard to make it fit.
This is working with a plastic tip but ım going to try micro fiber tip for the next design.
