Yes and no... Would need to test but if it has hard stop it will reduce ability to use multi-turn, would need to position it properly (to match the app's hard stops etc) and once we do a rack focus it will mess with the physical knob limits. If it has no hard stops we'll see if it is helpful but I doubt it... Also it has stick well to avoid wooble but not too much so we can remove it easily when not on focus page...

Once you'll get a chance to try the virtual knob moving automatically while rack focusing you'll probably say 'physical FF are so last century !"

You're probably right
I'm really curious about this, actually.

My main concern would be the lack of physical feedback, being able to use "muscle memory" while looking at the scene and not having to keep your eyes focused on the touchscreen to see what you're doing...

Here is an idea. Don't if it will work but it might.
"Suction cup focus wheel"
Connects to screen with suction cup in the middle. The ring holds a small stylus touchscreen pen. And the wheel rotates easly with the bearings.
So when you connect and rotate the wheel, stylus changes the focus.

Here is another design. Since suction cup wobbles too much this might be a better idea.

Its kind of a case for the phone.
Case holds the bearing in the middle which holds the knob and the little arm with the stylus tip.

This way the pressure on the tip is always the same and much durable.
Also if you want to change anything from the app. You can click out the side of the case, do your changes and click it again for the use of the wheel.


by the way i wish i had a 3d printer. Its too costy here when you print somethig at a 3D print house.

it is interesting. but if you do make one prototype one day to try it out, it raises questions like :

put some hard stops on your system or rely only on app's hard stops ? (If you do it will limit the app to 1 x 360 degree turn whereas it can now be switched on the fly to x2, x3, x5 and x10 turns if needed). If single turn only with the accessory, I would need anyway to add a button for calibration of physical hard stops with the virtual ones so they match.
- your new design is much better than a suction cup solution but also is way too big, at least to make it work with the current design of foolcontrol. You'd need to reduce the wheel size and move or eventually have a way to adjust the vertical center (see pict below for proportions). All the red areas are filled with buttons for adding markers, set smooth rack focus speed, iris menu, magnify, lens info, range limit, AF mode, RED start, options etc etc so better not cover it at all as they all are useful when focusing.
- Wheel itself would need to be transparent to be able to see the electronic marks, even tho you could have interchangeable disc maybe for those who prefer to use a good old marker pen (white area is used for both user's colored marks and upcoming preset lens specific distance discs in feet/meters)
- Right now I have distance info, racking progress and marker set button on center of the wheel... it is handy on touchscreen but I could always fit those elsewhere later on if they are covered by your device...

Altho the virtual knob is surprisingly effective I'm curious with what you may come up with... let me know here or by email, how it goes or whenever you're ready to do some test with the wheel UI...

Just a thought, not based on experience, no idea if rolling works, wouldn't be a little rubber wheel much more precise? One that rolls in a circle while the top round plate is rotated.I have some of those "rubber tip" pens here and they have quite some wiggle room.

Dr. Sassi rubber wheel is a great idea. If only we can find a rubber wheel that has the same material with stylus pens than it will be great. Im not shure how it works but ordinarry rubber probably will not mimic the finger touch since there would be no electron exchange. But maybe we can figure out a solution for that.

I didn't think about hardstops but it might come handy in some stuations im going to look into that. At this point it turns freely as long as you want.

I thought, once the app is set up you put the wheel on and you are ready to go. So for a more comfortable focus i made the wheel larger. But of course if some wants to change anything on the app they will heve to remove the wheel and change the values. Maybe a smaller wheel will be batter as you say. vertical center can easly be adjustable. i will work on that also.

im thinkinig to make the wheel from transparent plexyglass(at least for the prototype) maybe two layers, one thick steady and one thin that can be changable.

I guess only problem right now would be the wiggle room of the rubber tip pens that Dr Sassi mentioned.
