  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol for iPhone...

What is the absolute resolution of focus control trough out the entire control chain with say a Canon or Nikon lens ? i.e. 1cm 5cm etc ?

Also is there Iris and zoom control planned ?
 
Yes offhollywood is releasing very small a small device to use foolcontrol or other REDLink apps with a wifi -> serial bridge you can plug in CTRL port and attach anywhere

Step are not distance related but the camera accepts over 65000 focus steps (lens might have less tho) and the combination of setting range limits and multiple knob turns allows such precision in foolcontrol...
FIZ control via WMD yes (have a demo video on my vimeo acc).
Iris control yes but the step of the motor is not the same as focus, difficult to use for smooth iris pulls.
 
FoolControl with a small wifi device (hopefully that is what the Offholywood product offers)....

This is exactly what we are looking for gimbal and remote head work, this can't come fast enough.

I hope you implement Apple watch control in this. I think it would actually work pretty well with multiple watches.
 
So when is the app being released? It's not out yet for iphone right, just OSX on a computer?

yes OS X version for sale since April... iOS will be available this month (should be available when offHollywood HOTLink ships in october)

Won't work as the app requires iOS 7... fool control will only work on iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 5c, 6, 6+, iPad mini, iPad air, iPad retina (3rd and 4th gen), iPad 2, iPod touch. 5th ten I think.

Not sure if this has already been answered but what range are you getting? Any details on max range?
 
Mark tested last week in NY signal busy environment and had to go beyond 60 feet for iPod touch to loose camera signal using HOTLink and standard 1 inch antenna. You can also use a router in between if you have ac power around and boost the signal... Could help for gimbal/drone work

Pushing it even further is possible too... I can easily connect from Paris to Mark's camera in NY with my iPhone to his HOTLinked camera if he opens a port redirect on his wifi router :-)
 
Elizabeth... As a single guy shop with limited ressources, several OS X apps to maintain and a real job as a filmmaker the best I can say if you want to use foolcontrol soon on a mobile device is to go to an apple store, pick up a $199 iPod touch. And if like Jarred you were on Android because iPhone screen is too small... then grab an iPhone 6+ :-)

Sorry but until I can afford hiring someone to help me Foolcontrol for Android will stay on the 'to do maybe later list'... Cookies or not cookies.

Here’s a quick foolproofing experiment I did just before packing for Amsterdam...

mini torture test : multi-connecting 4 devices to a single DRAGON shooting the scene :-)

iPad mini iOS 7
OS X 10.9.4 (also tested 10.10 beta)

newly announced iPhones 6 and 6+ have a nice zoomed display mode so all should be good too until I redesign it specifically for those screens (in zoomed mode everything will just be a bit larger but still crisp as the app is mainly text and buttons and some people will actually like it since there are a LOT of buttons in the iOS app). Now let’s have a look at that Apple Watch dev kit…

sorry for the out of focus parts but wasn’t too easy vince I also was holding the camera in the other hand :-D

LOL, fair enough, Mikael. I resisted the whole smart phone thing for years (heck I resisted CELL phones for years) but got burned a couple of years ago on a shooting trip when my insurance agent presumed I could do email by phone and sent some important communications that I didn't receive in time. So in April of this year, I finally went with a Samsung Galaxy 4 and a Verizon plan (I resent a lot of the intentional crippling/proprietary protection that Apple puts on their devices re file sharing and USB interfacing.) So I just wanted a way to use my existing smart phone with its beautiful 1080 screen to do the things that foolcontrol allows, especially since the phone goes EVERYWHERE with me now.

But hey, after just watching your last video demo with the virtual wheel for focus . . . wow. So after initially being more attracted to a dedicated hardware knob interface for focus, and after realizing that your apps will work with the new gadget that Mark (Off Hollywood) is releasing AND that I can get an ipad for $200, this is simply too good to pass up. Will be going back to the beginning of this thread to better acquaint myself with what I had hurried by before.:-)
 
Jack . OS X version thread is here...

It is not for sale on the Mac App Store but it is a signed app. I do frequent updates and have different licenses (basically you don't have to pay full price if you are only going to use it with a single epic or scarlet)... Not easy or even possible to do this with App Store distribution.
