  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcat / foolmeta - R3D catalogs and metadatas ingest

3.83 fixes an issue under 10.6.8 introduced with the new dark / light themes where the html css file was corrupt (thanks Dino)

will look deeper into another issue with snow leopard related to processing speed as the same machine can catalogs R3Ds much much faster under 10.8 / 10.9 compared to 10.6...

stereo R3D flip flop options added

stereo R3D flip flop options added

version 3.87 lets you flip, flop (or both) the centre, left or right eye on R3D clip thumbnails for those shooting in stereo... (and a free upgrade as always)

first:

Mikael, great product, thanks....

second:

thank you joe steel, one of our brothers from across the pond for turning me on to this awesome product, thanks for all your help joe!

third, want to make sure all of you that are using foolcat, to not miss out on one of the great features of redcine x, (thank you sound mixer mark weingarten, david fincher and deanan's team) specifically, grabbing scene and take numbers from the sound files...

yes that is right, if you did not already know, when you go into redcine x and automatch with the sound files and then click the "copy metadata" check box, then if the sound person added scene and take to each one of their clips, then that info ports to the metadata of each file so that when you run foolcat, each clip also has the proper scene and take number boldly depicted prominently in the report, which as we know that is all editorial really cares about not a001c004 blah blah blah...

ok happy shooting.

Hi Mikael

great software . Just a quick query can you update or do you buy the new update ?

Currently on 3.22 but cannot see how to update otherwise.

Thanks
Mike

Mike > all updates are 100% free from the beginning... just unzip new version and your license will keep working like on first day :-)

Dino > thanks much for your support. glad to hear you're making good use of foolcat !
Thanks also for demo-ing the app to Jarred... he already showed it to David Fincher and who knows who else :-)

I'm working on a brand new app at the moment, that will get you (and many others) very happy.
If foolcat is your "evening wrap buddy", fool**** will be your daily friend :-)

I just saw this at REDucationNY Great program!

Hmmm... a new program? Fooldit? Foolcopy?

cool, do you remember who showed it ?

much cooler than that

Actually we had rockstar Local 600 DIT Partick "Pat C" Cecilian demo it Reducation NYC.

Mikael - a few features requests to your next app - not very exciting but very useful IMO -

Option to auto-detct REDMAGs (like Red Watchdog) and when detected - copy to preset dsetinations. Allow for chechsum or no checksum - 1 copy at a time or multiple copies at the same time - checksum or no checksum option - and Eject mag when copy(s) are done with a nice "safe to remove" indication.

And you should just spin this into an on-set server :)

My Mistake! Sorry Pat.

Thanks for the update Mark!

Thanks Mark, thrilled to have foolcat demoed by rockstars at REDucation :-)

My new app is not about copying cards but sure would be handy to make a small robot to get that work done properly and automatically. Will look into this when I can :-)

foolcat was just updated this very minute to 3.9 fixing a crash on 10.9 when REDCINE-X wasn't installed on the machine (thanks Josh for the report).

Mikael, would it be feasible to incorporate a 3D LUT to the QuickTime stills? This would be super helpful for Arri LogC footage. FFmpeg's lut3d filter can do this; I've never been happy with the speed of that filter because it's single-threaded, but it might be fine for just a few frames.

Should be doable I guess... will have to look into it
Do you need a generic logC -> 709 LUT (if that exists) or want to be able to apply a specific user selectable LUT ?

Would live for some shotgun integration. Any chance you'll have a FoolSDK to execute a python script based on a FoolCatalogClass?

You want to auto catalog a folder / disk after having copying ?

I could maybe add support for applescript into foolcat... then one could easily set attributes and start cataloging automatically... something like that :
tell application "foolcat" to catalog folder "/Volumes/disk/folder" using title "Automatic catalog" and description "...."

But I don't know if shotput can execute a script post copying... feel free to reply here or contact me by email to discuss details of what you really need to do...

Basic LogC to 709 would be great most of the time, with a simple on/off checkbox in preferences. You could even read the metadata from each clip to determine what gamma it was recorded in.
I can imagine some scenario where it would be cool to have a custom LUT on a clip-by-clip basis, perhaps by importing a CDL file, but that's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Sorry, I didn't realize this was an Apple only tool. I ended up writing what I needed. However for Apple users I would imagine many of them would like some sort of Shotgun integration. What the tool I wrote does is take a number of R3Ds and upload a thumbnail for each to a Shotgun site with the metadata. I figure since you already have most of that handled inside your script it would be pretty trivial to add the Shotgun step at the end.

Sorry I wrongly thought you were speaking of shotput (file copy and md5 app) instead of shotgun...
Looks very interesting tho... Any foolcat user here using shotgun ?

Hi Mikael, I really love your program ( and producers and script continuity too!!). I was using it with R3D and now with prores ! Thank you very much for this tool and you excellent support!!!!
best regards sara
