  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

I'm thinking/hoping that mechanically, being that these aren't rehoused stills like the Compact Primes or CN-Es, that these will likely compete very well, right? $4k per lens isn't bad, but not amazing like those Zunows were (on paper). Even still, I feel like ACs will choose these of the CP2s if given the option… assuming that the mechanics are peachy (what say you Phil? 300deg focus rotation? Amazing marks?)

Are they planning an 18mm t2.1?

I think that's why peeps are excited about them. Mechanically speaking they are purposed designed for motion use.

These to me will be "more matched" than the CN-E and CP.2 primes as they are being designed as a set with consistent T stops to boot.

An 18mm might happen down the road, but that's after the 25 and 10 mm come out. I think the original plan on the 100 was to make it a macro, don't know if that changed or not.

Yeah the 100mm was supposed to be macro but it doesn't look like it now. Beyond these 5 lenses, they are rumoured to be 4 more for the set eventually.

Also, just noticed that the specs on weight have changed from the initial estimate.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that the 25 weighs half a pound more than the others, but the dimensions are all the same? I guess there is a LOT more glass in there...

The wides are typically heavier because they have more glass.

Jeff, I don't know if you missed Illya's post from the other thread, but at least the first few sets of the 35, 50 and 75 are slated to go out the last week of November... did you mention you have an early deposit with Hot Rod Cameras?

HRC first shipments of Xenons contain both PL and EF mount options, and start arriving the week of 11/25. Hot Rod Cameras has several dozen Xenons due to arrive. We also have received assurance that all our 35, 50 and 75mm Xenon lenses will arrive before Christmas.

I'm #1 on the list with Duclos. I guess I'll have to see what's up, but there's a lot of conflicting info out there at the moment, even amongst authorized dealers of these lenses.

I'm near the top of Illya's list - I'll race ya

Regardless, with the 25mm not coming out until April according to Bob's post, I probably won't be seeing these put on any paid projects for a while. Looks like I'll be picking up one of those sigma 18-35 rehouses in the meantime.

The sigma is going to tie me over too.

OK. haha… I'll still have to wait a day or two for FedEx to deliver them to me after Matt checks them out.

Yeah, the 25mm is somewhat critical and I know they're working on a couple other focal lengths, but they haven't said what. They will probably get the initial 5 out there and orders managed before moving on to more. I have the Tokina 11-16, Optimo 16-42, and 18mm RPP to cover the wide end for now. I sold my set of Zeiss T2.1 standards a while back and then after playing with the Xenons at NAB, I figured a compact T2.1 set of primes would be good to have again -- especially with modern optics and FF coverage. I'm definitely anxious to get them, especially once the 25 and 100 are here to round out the set.

Just received email, from Duclos lenses. Matthew said that the 1st batch ships, from Schneider on December 1,2013 (35,50.75). The 25 has a March, 2014 ship date and the 100 has a Feb., 2014 ship date. As Jeff mentioned above, Matthew does a QC evaluation of each lens, before shipping to end users. No update , on availability/pricing of additional mounts. I don't know if the ship relates to Schneider's German or North American site, however. With the 11/25/2013 posts above, we can hope the Dec. date is the pertinent N.A. one

Thank you very much

Phil, nice review, thanks.

How much are we looking to pay per lens?

That means new 14,18mm will be even more.
Hope they do some decent packages for set of 5/6 next year.
