  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look: Interchangeable OLPF on Dragon

You know, many "working DPs " don't share or show their tests to anyone.

Phil is doing this community a service on his dime and is presenting it in RED's house. If I read another post suggesting he is "selling" or "spinning", not disclosing or implying that he is working for RED or a fanboy or doesn't have post knowledge, then I'm going to act on that that feeling of wanting to barf that I get in my stomach when I read that stuff.

battistella

I agree this is not fair. I for one didn't say that. I said his enthusiasm maybe sometimes got the better of him, and that this could potentially be construed (implied: by others) as selling. These are very, very different concepts.

I also didn't say he was a fanboy, only that several (unnamed) Redusers were, which is hard to dispute, and that one is treated harshly here if one goes against the official stance of Red Inc. in any way shape or form, even if one is saying, as I am, that older Red products, still for sale on Red.com, are preferred by me (and I even said Epic MX I liked better than any other camera system) to newer ones until full solutions are fully confirmed.

I will also state again here that I appreciate Phil's efforts, and the improvements Red seems to have made with what I will call the " OLPF 1.5" I even offered to do my own tests and publish them. For saying that I am accused of trolling by a moderator.

I stand behind my statements, and the suggestion that the way Reduser currently feels, and how easy it is to get banned, scares away a lot of people, and turns them off Red.

Now watch me get banned for this post, or my account deleted yet again….

Great work Phil. Really great. You've saved me doing these tests for myself. So now I owe you. :)

When Jarred releases the drop on OLPF system. I'll be going for the low light versions for all our cameras.
I get stuck in so many different situations. Best to cover myself with a more versatile Olpf.
Plus I have never had highlight or skin issues in the first place.. With this second version (even though slightly better ) I have no need for at the moment. But I will buy a spare just in case the time comes about.
If the boys at RED ( or outsider ) bring out a color Olpf with the latitude of the monochrome. ! Then that would be seriously massive game changer.

What IRE should middle grey fall at 800 in redlogfilm?

18% Gray/Middle Gray falls in the IRE range of 41-48 whether you are in REDlogFilm or one of the REDgamma gamma spaces. However, due to the nature of how gamma curves function how much lands in that range depends on your gamma and curve settings. As well as contrast for that matter if people are using a custom look or whatever.

A quick fun test is to leave Video Check on and expose something at 18% Gray with RC/RG4 at ISO 800 and then toggle to "RAW" and see how much more "green" lights up.

Heh. Thank you Mark. I'm doing a very "skin oriented shoot" at the end of the week and I'm running with the LLO OLPF just because. I'm based on these tests I'm actually surprisingly pleased at what I'm seeing in the footage.

I will say I'm into the subtle but noticeably better color on the STH OLPF. It's all within a "happy zone" and that's what makes me happy, which is good. Good out of camera color should be making everybody real happy in reality.

Hey Phil

Fantastic Test ! This will save us a ton of time when we get our dragons.

Quick question, is the Low light OLPF an improved version over the original OLPF ?

Thanks once again Phil.

best

Adrian

Phil thanks for all your hard work.
I am a believer of the Skin tone OLPF since I use more light.
All the best in your upcoming work
cheers

Alexandre

Great tests Phil. If by any chance did you do any LLO OLPF tests with the Motion Mount that you recall the results? Really looking to go in that direction after this swap out. Anyone remember how many stops the MM eats?

So are the original OLPF1s (the super low light sensitive ones) not going to be available for swapping? I'd personally prefer to have both the new OLPF and the original one that was so great in low light over a medium one that I'm reading about here.

Frank, mulitple OLPFs will be available:

1) A "new" Lowlight OLFP (a revised, improved version of the OLPF1 you're talking about...except w/ much less "orb" flare, and perhaps even better color). This should be able to shoot clean 2000 iso. Base 800.

2) The current "Skin Tone" OLPF (ie OLPF2).

3) And a still in development "Standard" OLPF which will have an exposure range somewhere in btw the two above.

Oh my, this is such good news. Thank you, Nick, very excited. Any projected dates for the release?

Thanks a lot, Phil. Your tests are really helpful.

One great advantage of the new LLO OLPF, at least for my approach to narrative filmaking, is that now you can use anamorphic lenses at night and give them a decent shooting stop, using the same light intensity levels that you would use with the OLPF v2.

Unfathomable Dynamic Range

Unfathomable Dynamic Range

Is it possible this will be the future of imaging?... making everything but the sensor, glass, media and boards obsolete?

EDIT: "Colour image sensors can be found in all common types of digital cameras and devices (reflex, automatic, webcams, cell phones, tablets, etc.) and they have an architecture that consists of a monochrome sensor (in black and white), covered with a layer of colour filters (commonly, red, green and blue, also known as RGB). This architecture only extracts information from one of these three colours in each pixel within the image. To extract the information from the rest of colours in each pixel, it is necessary to apply algorithms which in most cases are among manufacturers’ best-kept secrets.

According to the PI in this group, Miguel Ángel Martínez Domingo, “the new sensors developed at the Polytechnic University of Milan are called Transverse Field Detectors (TFD) and they are capable of extracting the full colour information from each pixel in the image without the need for a layer of colour filter on them.

In order to do so, they take advantage of a physical phenomenon by virtue of which each photon penetrates at a different depth depending on its wavelength, i.e., its colour. In this way, by collecting these photons at different depths on the silice surface of the sensor, the different channels of colour can be separated without the necessity of filters.”
