  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FEB Update / IPP2 Preview 2

I never have updated firmware on a plane before, but there's a first for everything :)

And thanks for putting the cubes up on their own!

a new "mile high club" kudos

and great work on throwing up some examples while en route.. awesome !

What are the status on orders through RED Europe? I ordered on August 4th and was suppose to recievr it by fall 2016, but now not even my rep knows when I will get it.

Thanks Jarred :)

Update fixed an issue I was having with my Raven, the saturation kept getting pushed to 1.987, even though it was a minor issue, all fixed now :) thanks again

Thanks Jarred! Everything happens for a good reason at RED... I am relaxed waiting for my upgrade without a rush whatsoever... Take your time. It's worth the wait while you RED Team keep making magic on the LAB!!! in the end we all benefit from that! Win-Win :)

To give you an idea of what's possible, this is one of my tests with a bleach bypass effect Creative Cube.

Wow Graeme! That's absolutely amazing to be able to do in camera... Do you plan to share some of your LUTS with us? heheheheheh Super job man... WOW!

Reps see the same information that Jarred does when he posts these updates. So, they know orders today likely get allocated this Summer.

Early August, you probably Spring.

If you put 2 and 2 together given my reply to TD Wood, you will see roughly what order dates we are at.

this is huge stuff, thank you.

with all of this work based around luts it
would be great if RedcineX had a way to
apply a lut then "fade" or blend its effect.

what exactly is the creative cube?

To me the only right way to go would be to make RCXP to be node based. A lot of times It´s not about blending two luts against each others but several and I think a node based setup would make it easer to see the flow graph of what is actually going on in the IPP. Preferably you could switch between the current layout and a node tree, and also I think it would be good if there was a simple way to see what is carried over trough the RMD sidecar to other applications, Like some nodes are lit red and some green or such to show what comes with when opening the file someplace else.

Then next step would offocurse be to extend the side car and let everything carry over, luts and the whole enchilada.

Thanks for your answer Brent.

Just feel bad that as a student I can't really benefit from the great upgrade paths due to budget, just wish there was a solution for the ones that plan on staying on the scarlet-w path for now too...

Getting better all the time...

Getting better all the time...

Thanks for the comparison images Phil, you saved me hours of time getting the feel of the options. Usual caveat about the right look for any particular image/project/captured contrast ratio.

For well exposed footy with plenty of native DR and human subjects; medium contrast with HRO 2 looks like a solid "normal" rendering that would work well on set.

The most attractive rendering, at least to my eye, is HC/HRO4. It manages to have enough "pop" to stand up for itself, but without feeling at all crushed. Depending on the project/look I could see HC/HRO4 as an excellent "starting point" both for on set monitoring and grading. Many of us have toggled between log and punchy in monitoring to "box the compass" to see what's in the image. This LUT combo manages to show more "normal" contrast ratios without sacrificing subtleties in both near shadow and near highlight zones.

Feedback for Graeme: in assigning a "default" rendering, one is faced with a dilemma - enough contrast and saturation to read well on set, even in sub-optimal viewing conditions (wide variances in ambient light for starters), but without compressing code values near the shoulder and toe so much that it compromises the ability to see all that you captured when viewing in a more controlled environment. I cast my vote for HC/HRO4 as most useful in real world situations.

I may get schooled for saying this, but is there a reason RED can't just have a look to "match" Alexa? I know it can beat Alexa in specs, pricing, size, etc. But clients out there sometimes just "want that Alexa look." It'd be great to be able to say "oh yea, it matches perfectly!" I know that can be achieved already with talented colorists on even free software. It just is seen as an extra step to many talented D.P.s I know, and so they own Alexas. In my eyes, it's laziness on their part to just hit record and be done. But it could be fun to flip a switch into a mode that matches Alexa perfectly. It shouldn't be called that in-camera, or else it looks like RED is playing catch-up when it's actually leading the industry. But it could become a whisper among DPs and rental houses that there's finally "no difference" in the look. "RED can intercut with Alexa out of the box." All the specs and flexibility in the world are great, and that's why I own a RED Weapon, but it would be nice to have a simpler answer to clients than "well with the right LUT and a talented colorist you could make a RED look just like an Alexa!" Just a thought. I'll take my schooling, now. :)

If you want cameras from all different manufacturers to match each other, try Academy ACES which normalizes all cameras and puts them through a common output transform.

IPP2 in-camera is for Helium sensor cameras only. See http://www.postmagazine.com/Press-C...introduces-image-processing-enhancements.aspx for more info.

Thanks for your work Graeme,

I can also see that there is a upgrade for Weapon MG (I think there exists only Weapon MG with Dragon sensor) so does the IPP2 implementation not work with MG Dragon?

With current camera bodies the luts will never be applyable on playback or to proxies, is that confirmed?

Any hints for those of us allocated for SW in mid-November? Still waiting! Thanks.

Wait, you were allocated, like "your camera is ready?" and you have not gotten it? Please PM me your order number.

Thanks for your answer Brent.

SCARLET-W is going to be a bad ass camera for years to come....

WOW!! Look at what low and medium contrast with HL #4 does to skin tones!!!!!

I'm really blown away by this, ..

I am just stoked to have RWG in camera and I will load the transforms luts in my external recorder easy like Sunday AM
