  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FEB Update / IPP2 Preview 2

Low Con Highlight 4 is the shit.

Great to see this!

Will IPP2 ever make it into DSMC cameras?
ON the upgrade page it looks like all changes are DSMC 2 only.
Any changes from previous version to this version for EPIC-X Dragon?

Pretty sure it's not possible to do hardware-side in DSMC1 bodies due to lack of hardware for 3D LUT support and likely some additional hardware.

Full blown IPP2 is DSMC2 Helium bodies. It appears REDWideGamutRGB/Log3G10+Transform LUT is coming to DSMC2 Dragon bodies, but it's been noted that Helium brains have special hardware in there. Perhaps something to do with the new demosiac maybe?

Aren't the skin tones (mid gray+) a bit too flat with Highlight 4?

That will largely depend on subjectivity and even light intensity.

Something that is interesting to explore is developing footage with these various Transform LUTs combined with adjusting ISO and also additional grading as well. For instance, you can aim with Low Contrast and a smooth Highlight Roll-Off, but can also add density via grading.

Of course it's all subjective, but I'm really liking it. Those flattened silvery highs reads more "cinema" and less "video" to me. I feel like saturation works in a more pleasing way with the rolloff, as well. You can crank the saturation and the highs don't go too insane on you.

Here's the same still processed in all 6 LUTs. I think I processed these a third-stop up from last time, so it will look slightly different to the previous version.

..Full blown IPP2 is DSMC2 Helium bodies...<snip>..Helium brains have special hardware in there. Perhaps something to do with the new demosaic maybe?..

8k Demosaic : For viewing 8k on '2k' monitoring screen - it maybe that this would waste (considerably more) power on something (probably) not visible at a lower resolution.

However : When punched in to 1:1 magnification, the area perfectly in focus should contain a band of pixel data with a steeper 'spike' of detail. This (I would speculate) could be used to help nail what is in focus - either by eye (maybe a new HDR mode that amps up luma of the in-focus band) or using auto-focus (which might be able to more rapidly / accurately nail focus).

And, if only 1/16 of the screen was being demosaiced using the new algorithm - might that be possible within the DSMC2 hardware limit?

Does VV have IPP2 yet?
Weapon Dragon 6K -> Helium 8K -> VV Does (in my understanding) still have additional IPP2 hardware.
Weapon Dragon 6K -> VV Does not (in my Guestimation) have the hardware.

My assumption here is that the IPP2 hardware is not physically built into the sensor, but is attached to the DSMC2 body.

If IPP2 (on camera) use is a run-away success in Helium - and it is physically possible to upgrade 6K Weapon Dragons to make use of the IPP2 hardware, it maybe in REDs interest to allow new Weapon Dragon cameras to include (even at a cost) the IPP2 hardware.

If the above punt is correct, After Helium IPP2 firmware goes 'production', RED could consider porting and releasing the firmware to Weapon Dragon, giving those with no IPP2 hardware, the option to upgrade.

Is there 17^3 version?

Thanks

Use Lattice or other LUT tool to downsample. However, a 17 cube will not be as precise and although you'll get the "feel" you might loose some nuance or get some banding.

Medium Contrast with Highlight Roll-Off 2 is great. Thanks RED team.

Here are some more samples for you guys. Shot on Helium. Honestly...for skin tone, I'm liking RWG/RedGamma 4 but I also like LowCon R4 if you pull a bit of the REDs/Sat out. I've also included a link to download high resolution TIFFS too.

based on the above (from Chris's post # 135) I can see the need to use different looks for different skins. Problem with that would be when two different skinned characters are in the same shot.

This may be something an Indie movie maker may have to take into account when setting up a shot, if we want to hold down budget for post to get continuity.

The determination behind what type of development look to use is much more to do with personal aesthetic choice and lighting / exposure. Is the shot high key or low key. Is the light flat or dramatic. That's the driving factor, not skin tone.

Graeme

To add, these are the sort of changes you'd normally do in grading. And they still can be, but by having a preset look to try you can achieve the result very quickly and easily rather than through expert use of grading controls. I'd still recommend and expert use grading controls, but this can get you most of the way very very quickly and easily.

Good points. I'm still trying to get familiar with this and that helps.

I find this very true especially dealing with brown /African skin tones which tend to reflect light alot
