  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FEB Update / IPP2 Preview 2

I have been testing the new ipp2 update, and I find that the low contrast is nicer....just hope in the future they will be backed in pro res for quick works!

From what Mark said, it's going to be a flat ProRes/DNx file with a lut.

Glad you like it! In the past people have requested both more and less contrast for the default look, so I hope the low / med / high covers the basic needs. To go beyond that you can (in full IPP2) adjust the rolloff (see examples in the LUT drop), or turn off the tone curve completely and build your own using the optional Creative Cube 3D LUT. The Creative Cube can do more than just contrast. Almost any look can be built into it rather easily and by keeping the input and output RWG/Log3G10 you can leverage all the built in math to handle colour space conversion and gamut mapping.

loading new ipp2 update now, Thank you ! Especially you Graeme. You are continuously involved with us who are actively shooting with these sensors and its shows in the development and support we are getting.. truly remarkable.

Thanks very much. The feedback I've been receiving has been both fantastically positive and very useful.

Dear Graeme,

I need to dig deep into the new things you have done for us. THANKS!

Quick question: is there any room left in the current architecture for emulating film stocks? Print film luts etc?
Like we did in the past, when we usually applied a 3D film lut on the redlogfilm, in the last node, and did all the corrections in log space under that last node…

Thank you for the continuing improvements!

So part of having the Creative Cube there in the pipeline is the ability for you to do just that. For experimentation purposes I did bleach bypass emulation as a creative cube, and also 3 strip Technicolor emulation. Both worked well. I'm sure people will do named film stock presets, or other creative treatments in this slot. I also went a bit wild and tried some more interesting looks and they also worked superbly well.

The new color space and gamma don't limit post flexibility, if anything it increases it. We now have a look that gives us access to the full color gamut and dynamic range of the camera, which was already huge.

And as far as I can tell, there's nothing stopping us from puttinga film lut on the camera... or buidling our own film lut incamera, once we get the full IPP2 implementation...

Exactly! And as I mention above, although not tested with a measurement derived film emulation, similar looks (mathematically defined) work very well.

I'm very excited about this.

To give you an idea of what's possible, this is one of my tests with a bleach bypass effect Creative Cube.

this is huge stuff, thank you.

with all of this work based around luts it
would be great if RedcineX had a way to
apply a lut then "fade" or blend its effect.

what exactly is the creative cube?

dreams are coming true..

So fading is not currently an option, but I can stick it on the requested feature list.

Under IPP2 there's three main stages: Primary Raw Development (from camera data to RWG/Log3G10), Grading, and Output Transform (to REC709/BT1886 say). Looking at the Grading stage the expected input is always RWG/Log3G10, and so is the output. The first part of the Grading stage is ASC CDL (including saturation), which is all to spec. This can do a lot, but some people can find it limiting. The second part of the Grading stage utilizes the 3D LUT capability in camera and gives you the ability to insert what I call a Creative Cube (i.e. a Cube designed for creative grading effects) into the pipe at that point. That means you can still use all the IPP2 math of the Output Transform and thus go out to both SDR and HDR, different colour spaces etc.

Hi Thai,

it's still a LUT that gets applied to the output on the hdmi or LCD ports.
The full release will also write the choice (like DC2 on dragons) into the RAW metadata and that way you can review clips
also with the correct curves applied in camera.
If I'm wrong please correct me, this is my understanding of it...

cheers,

Stefan

Thanks Stefan. This was my understanding too. Can't wait for finalized IPP2.

Hello all,

Just wanted to put some samples up showing some of these IPP2 Preview Cubes.

This is showing what each Contrast and Highlight Roll-Off cube is producing.

I would say for general shooting, and as Graeme mentioned, Contrast Medium with Highlight Roll-Off 2 works great.

From there it gets interesting on how you can tailor your in camera image as well as what you are working with on the post side.

For instance, High Con w/ HRO 4 is pretty cool for a lot of situations as it adds some density to the overall tones while keeping the highlights wrangled with a smoother highlight roll-off.

I have some recent footage on Helium I'll run these through once I get back home as well.

Raven... don't even ask. We actually stopped taking new orders completely till we get caught up, which will be summer / fall time as well.

LOL

Thanks Phil

So may be bit off topic, but was updating my Epic M Dragon to latest firmware (v6.3.78 - I was on v6.3.75) and while I was blackshading the camera just shut down on it's own.

Now, the camera is bricked. It has a red indicator when I have auxillary power or a battery attached, but when I try to boot, the PWR indicator light stays red, flashes only once and then continues staying solid red.

Any suggestions?

I asked because that response was to someone who got in line two months+ after me. Big difference as when you got in line means everything. It would be great if they could estimate in sections of 15 days. So if you ordered from dec 1-15, estimated around "this" time, etc. But that may be too much work to figure out.

In a perfect world, we would be able to give even more granular updates. Unfortunately, it is not. To provide estimates for every possible combination of "when you placed your order" x "what camera you are sending in" x "what camera you are upgrading to" would be an significant amount of work. And we would have to revise at least weekly to be accurate to reflect latest production line trends.

Which means more people. Which means more overhead. Which means our cost per camera goes up. And then it hits your bank account in the stomach.

What I can say is we expect to be caught up on all current upgrade orders by late Spring/early Summer.

And this is why the sane companies of the world don't offer upgrades in the first place. ; )

Sean, please file a support ticket. Always the best path for such things.
