In my defense, it is late and I am tired.

On how digital cameras have changed the process of film making:

Couple of points...

1. It is difficult for someone entering the industry to experiment with film. It is very easy to experiment with digital to help learn the craft.

2. Digital won't replace film until it looks better. Top dogs typically won't sacrifice image quality for a few dollars. We think that time has now come. But that is just us.

3. Instant viewing of what you have shot is a huge advantage to a DP. Not having to wait a day (or more) to see and verify your results, strike sets, etc. gives digital a big advantage in this area. We know top guys who are editing their footage and putting on a base grade the same day/night that they shoot RED footage.

4. There can be big advantages to owning your equipment over renting... if you can afford it. Many pay for their equipment many times over before it is necessary to replace with the next big thing. Plus... the advantage of having your gear with you at all times means always being ready if "something comes up"... like an idea or event, or even just leisure experimenting.

5. SSDs are reusable. Whether you need 2 or 200 for your project, at some point they can be wiped and used over and over again. Each time they cost you less.. half again what they cost you the last time you used them.

6. Digital has proven capable to be matched to just about any kind of film stock you can shoot. Film cannot be made to match digital.

7. Film is great. Now digital is too. Lucky us...

And from the same discussion:
If making films just got easier, making great films didn't. The difficult part for aspiring artists/filmmakers? no one can teach them how to love.

A thread about HDRx motion interpolation. :-)

My eyes don't work that way unless my eyes track the arm. My eyes seem to work exactly like a normal shutter.

But if I follow the arm it's motion blur free and the BG is motion blurred. If I follow a filmed arm on a screen, it's obviously still motion blurred. So in *that* respect I suppose they are similar. But I don't just normally see in magic motion.

If you really want to get a better idea of what Scarlet is about, download the chicken .r3d file and the correct redcine-x 356e version for your computer.
Redcine runs out of its own folder after you decompress it.

Decompress the Chicken.r3d in a video directory so you know where it is. In Redcine click the browser tab at the left edge of the screen, find the r3d clip, double click it to load it into the viewer. Then just play with all the image grading controls on the right side. You will learn more about Red and digital cinema vs video from this than any compressed web video you will ever see.
