  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Price of RED after Epic

IMO it's good to wonder about this, but only to a point.

After that the time/energy spent on speculative thought process is past the point of diminishing returns.

I guess that point is different for everyone.

Do you think all of those additional electronic pieces of the camera are going to cost so little when the Cheeseplate is 300$?

I think the modular concept is excellent, but I have to believe that current pricing on accessories should point towards what those additional units will actually cost. I mean my LCD cable was 175$ or something.

Theses bits cost a lot to make (especially with all the connections needing to be bulletproof etc.) I wonder what the real final numbers will shake out to be.

this is an excellent point. Putting a RED package together can be like "death of a thousand cuts". I LOVE my system, don't get me wrong, but the infastructure is expensive.

Just look at how much extra you have to pay for a complete RED package... adding a solid tripod, matte box, follow focus, batteries and most important a set of good cine lenses you can easily spent 50K on top of your 17K RED one body... depending on the glass it can be 150K...

Don`t want to diss Red, but the Red One has a couple of shortcomings in terms of engineering, which won`t go away by just swapping sensors or electronics - examples:
1. the body is unergonomic and heavy (compared to the new bodies)
2. mini-connectors
3. battery not integrated (at least to me, it`s a nightmare having to clamp it either to
rods or somewhere on the top of the camera)
4. the control panel is at a really bad place (again, this might be subjective)
5. the menu system is hard to keep track of
6. no totally wireless control possible
7. the system is reaaaaaally power hungry and I don`t know how much that`s going to change with a new sensor

- so I believe that the Red One won`t be built after the new cameras, but serviced and upgraded as long as there are enough customers that justify R&D costs. To me, the Red One not only looks outdated (in contrast to Epic and Scarlet) but would cannibalize the new Epic product line if priced too low - on the other hand, if it`s priced too high it won`t sell very well. I see the Red One more as an R&D and wide scale test bed that primarily served the purpose to perfect the second generation cameras and technologies.

But maybe I`m totally off with all of my predictions... :-)

From conversations, I've had with well-informed people, the word is the price will not change. The reason for allowing trade-ups to Scarlett is precisely to prevent a second hand market for these cameras. Everything you're wondering Jim has already figured out before you even asked it. :)

if (as I think Jim indicated), they move to use more ASIC's and less FPGA's on the newer systems then you use a *lot* less power. FPGAs are bulky, expensive and take a lot of power and emit a lot of heat compared to an ASIC.

The benefit of the FPGA is flexibility and shorter turn times (you can kind treat the code you run like software)

Making an ASIC that is flexible enough not to tie you into one exact way of doing things is the trick, and it takes time & effort but can have huge savings in size, weight & power (and cost if you make a lot of units)

it's a stupid question ryan that's the point. what's the dollar going to be worth in six months?
And in your opinion ... the dollars worth in six months ... is also a stupid question? Let's see .... Obama, Hillary, Pelosi, Reid ...... What a lovely bunch of coco-nuts. Will America exist in six months?

The only ones worth less will be the ones not eligible for trade in. The question is what will Red do with the trade ins?

the red will be worth less than it is now after the epic is released.....

that is my bold prediction ;)

i dont think there will be many red ones in existence..
people will trade up or trade down.. and I doubt the sale of RED ONE will continue..

thats my prediction.,,

so in other words.. the body will be at least worth 17,500

especially if your in the under serial 2000 range.

Really? you think they will be able to ship that many? I think under 100 to maybe under 500 Range has some serial number value, otherwise, there is no rental advantage to the serial number as far as rental companies go and people hoping to recoup investment via rental...

The quetion is how many will buy/trade for Epic X or wait for Monstro? I know someone did a poll.

Seems there are mostly Scarlett users (future) buyers.

Why under 2000 Serial number? Just curious... thanks

Someone on the DSMC forums put it best.

Buy a FF35 Scarlet ($10k). But a 2/3" Scarlet ($3k). Buy the modules you need ($3-5k) and you have a new REDOne. The 2/3" covers highspeed framerates with the mysterium X. The FF35 gives you Monstro dynamic range at 4k+.

Why buy a RED? Costs less and is modular, lighter and has greater DnR.

That's largely dependent on module price but as I see it EVF will be the same price as the RED EVF so we understand pretty well its price. Recording module... ditto. Shouldn't break $500. Batteries are a well understood commodity for pricing leaving just the IO module as the big unknown. And I don't think it's going to cost more than $1k. At that point you've got all of the RED's 'modules'.

Its either ff35 monstro epic or the same thing in Scarlett form for much cheaper..
epic x ill pass..
im just hoping i can use ALOT of my current AKS for either of the new cameras..
Id hate to be out all that money on AKS i used for just a year.
