  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Facebook...

If they are all the same why is it that I find Google, Yahoo, etc. very (extremely) useful for my every day work and at the same time Facebook completely useless in the same realm. They are absolutely not the same, while there is a data mining resemblance.
I personally find posts like this diluting the original intention of this thread and this generalization very misleading... IMO

I've come to the conclusion that one can't say anything here without someone trying to make it personal.

Neither you nor anyone other than Jim knows "the original intention of this thread." My interpretation of Jim's original statements were that he finds it a bit puzzling and off-putting that Facebook has become extremely successful when its primary money making enterprise is data mining, while at the same time presenting itself as a place to promote the maintaining of old friendships and the creation of new ones, and with no actual, tangible, manufactured product. I took this as being a comparison of that approach to Jim's company, which makes money by developing and providing actual, physical products that perform a useful task. Perhaps you read Jim's statement differently. That's fine, but it doesn't make my statement any less relevant, and it doesn't make it at all misleading. And it doesn't warrant a personal criticism.

Reminded me of this one

Maybe I'm just a whiner, but making that kind of money which beats out most venerable companies in the world, one has to ask whether this is yet another example of a society creating "nothing" and contributing very little. It's just weird that people like Bono made 1.5 billion dollars in the deal, more than his band's cumulative earnings over twenty years. It just wreaks of something pathetic and an enormous transfer of wealth. It's not so much jealousy on my part, but I certainly respect a guy like Jim Jannard that really creates something more than a freaking software program that lets me communicate with friends.

Do you believe the company is worth one hundred billion dollars? I guess those guys in the CIA/FBI on the board of directors would love to see the continued success of it.

I know that most people here are too "old" for Facebook, since getting a RED camera isn't something one does in their teen years. But because I am young and Facebook has been a big part of my life so far, I would say that Facebook has just as much of an impact on film making as RED has. Facebook has allowed me to stay in connection with friends and make new contacts in the film industry. Where collaboration and communication is a big part of film making, Facebook has made it easier and better for young independent filmmakers like me. Also while Facebook recently made its stock open to the public, I'm not paying a dime or seeing any ads on my Facebook profile. It's a generation thing that I don't expect anyone past the age of 25 to understand.

Facebook makes money by selling your info. What a concept.

Jim

Does Red buy Facebook data? Buying up lists of people that post complaints, about vDSLRs lineskipping or saying digital cinema cameras are too expensive for indie film makers, to their Facebook wall and targeting them with Red ads....

Can not agree more... Selling people's privacy is a dirty job ...Integrity...Honesty..makes us more human and unites us...corruption,misleading people divides us...Business ethics and most of all integrity matters ....Nothing Else Matters....Nothing Else...

Hello young boy ;-)

Here is an old one in the 40ies speaking. Some young fellows, I met in a film festival, asked me to open an Facebook account to be able to communicate, make scedules, etc. with them. Well I did it, but what could have been done with a nice constructive meeting ended up in a big mess of miscommunication. Realtionship isn't a generation thing it's based on two or more people talking (seeing) each other.

Facebook is a tool to have fun looking or spying at friends.

I would love to be anti-Facebook, but I have too many friends I have reconnected with after 20 years of losing touch to bash it. I have one of my best friends now that I reunited with after not being able to find them for about 15 years...and crazy enough, she happened to live in the same city as me. Very interesting story. Never would have happened if there wasn't Facebook or something like it.

Everything that is good, has a bad. You do have to be careful with information these days and I wish there was a legitimate competitor to FB, but nothing is even close in it's ubiquity, which is exactly what you need for something that is reuniting old friends.

I wil be very curious where they go and how they use that ubiquity. Next stop: Bringing media into the social realm. How cool would it be if we were all watching the same show or sporting event at the same time on FB and could all make occasional comments with our select friends in a "closed room?" Because of their ubiquity, I think it's silly to think they'll just tank or they are a trend. We'll see. It will be up to them to innovate and continue to USE their ubiquity in non-evil ways that determines their future.

My $.02.

Kevin

Oh no facebook sells my information.. Whoope de doo doo.

Does it really matter? Does the information that they sell really affect you.. ever? Let's get over ourselves, none of us are really that important or special.
Google does the exact same thing. The interwebs is a public domain. Going online is the same as going outside. You're out in public. What you do there can been seen by anyone that wants to look, no matter what website you go to. You are not anonymous, you are not in private.

The information that facebook sells can be found online without facebook. You can find almost anything about anyone if you know how and where to look. Don't want people to know your info, go live in Montana off the grid. All facebook does is collect and sort your information into a nice neat package to sell.

If you want to be outraged at a company, then be outraged at the companies that pay big $$$ for this information.

bingo!!!!!!

I love the concept. Im more than happy to trade my private info for what this Zucker guy delivers.

Mark Z brought 900 million people together… then took all their money and put it in his pocket. :-)

Jim

Jim

I'm not making a judgment... just stating what is.

Jim

Did I ever mention Aspartame? :-)

Jim

I'm Aspartame free... a good thing. And there is also something coming after Facebook.

Jim

Why are so many assuming that Jim is criticizing Facebook? He doesn't say anything critical...

Sour Grapes? I'd be thrilled. -t why not short a few shares? But please, Jim, dont take any money from VC's, because as im sure you already know, they only have one mission, a liquidation event. and thats either an ipo or a sale with a nice liquidation preference attached.. Keep kleiner perkins, sequoia and all the others off your board and off the cap table. Keep RED private!!! You make the best camera there is!!

facebook may not be useful to you... but it is to 900 million other people on a daily basis.

I'm not so sure of those numbers. Sure, there are 900 million people on there, but I'm guessing more than half got on because it seemed the cool thing to do. Then realized it isn't really all that useful.

I unplugged April 1, 2011. BEST decision ever

my brothers invention is going to change ALL of this... Facebook is about to be a great SHORT sale stock.

The invention allows you to turn your identity "on and off" the Internet ...
Took 8 years to get this patented... http://www.google.com/patents/US8028329

This will create an internet wide identity eco-system that will put end users in SOVEREIGN CONTROL over their digital identities
while also allowing you to convert any internet connected device into a SECURE ATM-like network for your identity

Google, and FB and other technology companies plan on enslaving the human race by controlling ALL of your ID... we trust users will choose our far less draconian solution. :)
