  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EXTRA RAVEN PACKAGE - WHAT SHOULD IT BE?

Can DSMC2 have more than four channels of audio (two internal, two on module)? For example, can you theoretically stack three "dual XLR modules" and have six channels+two built-in?

afaik DSMC2 modules do not stack like they did on DSMC.
But you already have a +1 and a REDLink bridge in a smaller / quieter camera brain.

You can then add one back module with i/o ports (and whatever else the module can do internally), then you can only attach a battery/power module for vlock, goldmount or redvolt xl batteries.

So unless a 3rd party creates a modular system in itself a but like Mark's video transmitter additionnal module you can attach to the omod you will probably have to use only 1 dsmc2 module at a single time...

But it's modular so you can use a power only module or use jetpack then base i/o depending on the shot's requirements.

do not expect to stack 2 base i/o modules to duplicate the ports... Nor record more audio channels in-camera than the 4 supported by the brain.

you can also attach to the dumb side a sidekick or the new mystery side handle... A top smart handle... 2 x cableless evf / touch lcd with buttons....

I'd like to have the card reader included in all the packages for the same price they are currently offered at. The kit should be able to work out of the box, that means being able to offload footage.

It would also be cool to have a package you build yourself. Like the price is $9950 and you pick up to 6 items or something.

It would be good if all handles have start/stop.

I assume RED makes lots of money on the media cards, it would be nice if they were more generous with the packages. Give us two 120 cards and a reader, not one.

- 240GB card
- 4.7'' touch
- Vlock IO module (SDI/TC/GEN/Hdmi/2 XLR/D-tap/ext.power in) THIS WAS ANNOUNCED BY JARRED NO? SO IT DOES EXIST? ;-)

February is still a long way to go...

Might add 2500.-- to the package due to the Vlock module...

I vote for a "build your own package" as well.

- Choose Jetpack or Base I/O (or other)
- Choose How many gigs of storage
- Choose your monitor
- Choose your handle

Etc...

That's what the store is now.

I'd like to see this package:

-Raven brain
-4.7 Touch Screen
-Base I/O v-mount (gold mount alternate please)
-(2) 240gb minimags
-Minimag USB3.0 reader
-AC power cable

this is exactly the one i would want with gold mount. if this was a pkg i would of put the deposit on it, but i got the brain instead.
but i also agree its not a ready to shoot pkg with one card and no reader.
reader should just be thrown into the pkg, i mean come on.

Based on Jarred's notes, my understanding is that package discounts are offered when the contents are a known set that enables RED to place larger orders for certain items which reduces unit costs. The mix and match approach doesn't create such savings, so there's no advantage for RED to share with us.

Cheers - #19

No... the store allows you to buy just one item. This would be a package where you would have to choose one of each, this or that. Then there's a discount applied for the package VS buying the items individually. What could possibly make more sense?
Unfortunately this is not how bundles work. The reason you get discount on bundles is that there is a roughly "predetermined" number of each component locked in. Then the manufacturer (RED) would contact their supplier and negotiate a price break based on that "predetermined" quantity. Then they would pass the savings to the customer. If there is no locked in bundle and "predetermined" quantity the manufactured can not negotiate the price break and, consequently , pass it to the customer. They have to order for stock and absorb all the cost related to it.
Jarred and Brent explained that pretty clearly I or so I thought...
oops Blair beat me to it...

Blair's got it right.

The "choose your own adventure" package won't benefit from the "bulk and predictability" concept.

I certainly see a few trends here. The desire for the 240GB MINI-MAGs is apparent.

I personally think with Raven a pure "ready to shoot" package might be important. Meaning including batteries, charger, and connection plate. Whether that's REDVOLT XL or RED BRICK based would be a discussion worth having.

I've noticed desire for the larger 7.0" DSMC2 LCD Touch in there as well.

I agree in principle with Phil's note about a "ready to shoot" kit that includes power. That said, it's my supposition that a base I/O w/V-lock would suit a larger number of buyers than any RedVolt based option. Not trying to bash the RedVolts, just going with the V-mount option since it's by far the most popular and available battery solution in the industry.

I fully agree. I can't speak for everyone, but coming from the DSLR -> BMCC/BMPCC -> RED upgrade path, I feel I represent a good sized chunk of the Raven demographic. Many of us have existing vlock battery systems, and since we're already stretching to handle a $10K Raven kit, jumping in to Red based battery solutions isn't realistic. We're also accustomed to add on monitors and recorder that are in the 7" form factor, such as SmallHD, Atomos, Odyssey, etc. As such I think a kit with a 7" touch, vlock, XLR (if a module presents itself) and 240GB would suit most users like myself.

Agreed. Add in a MiniMag reader and you are truly ready-to-shoot (and edit)

Have been thinking about another package for the last few days, almost started to write a reply multiple times... But honestly, i can't come up with a package that looks like it would make sense for many. I end up stitching together my own preferences and those aren't set of yet.

However, i would split up the packages... Camera-packages here, media-packages there and then give the option to choose from a few things in every package (LCD for example).

I like the idea of having a package with a REDVOLT XL module and the Base I/O. I also would add the Sidekick to the mix (but would prefer a functional and powered SH - hehe, sorry, couldn't resist).

What I'm proposing would work exactly the same as what Red is offering now.

Now, Red allows you to choose the Jetpack or the I/O Base bundle. So if X amount of people choose each bundle, the will know how many units to order from their supplier.

With the "choose your own adventure" package, Red would know how many units to order from their suppliers.

How's that any different?

How's that any different?

Depends. If we are talking 1000+ orders versus 30 or something for each "adventure".

It's not just about knowing "how many" units on RED's side, it's about knowing how many potential "kits" can be guaranteed sales.

The other way is literally just how things are in the store now.

Cost of labor comes into play here as well on manufacturing and fulfillment.

We better find a package that suits (most of) all or we will prove Jarred that there is no need to propose a new one.

So to start with :

DO WE AGREE WITH A I/O V-LOCK(OR GOLD) MOUNT IN THAT PACKAGE?
