  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-W

resolution is not measured by MB its measured by pixel count, if I'm not mistaken

I'm pretty sure Nick meant to say MP, as in mega pixels. And if you're comparing the relative sensor area, the number of pixels would be one way that's pretty intuitive.

People might think that going from 2k to 4k is "double the resolution", where it's in fact 4x since it's a doubling in two directions.

Anyway, 6k is twice the pixels (roughly) as 4.5k.

There is a 20K price gap between Mg and Cf as well.

If the Epic-W will have an Al or Mg body and Cf boards (maybe a bit lower specs but still ready for the 8K upgrade path), for 10k more than Mg, than that will be an awesome deal!

If I take Jarred's post literally "I don't want anyone that owns an Epic MX to feel like they missed the bus and have been left behind."

I'm thinking of a DSMC2 body with the old 1.8 redmags. Why, because that was the biggest reason for me not to do the upgrade. If they push the mini mags on this one I still will keep my MX.

I think another Epic will lead to too many cameras under the same roof. We already have a line of Epic MX, Epic Dragon, Red Raven, Scarlet-W, Red Weapon 6K MG, Red Weapon 6K Carbon (forged and woven), Red Weapon 8K.
When will it end? And if a new Epic-W would be better than the Red Weapon 6K MG, then that would mean anyone who upgraded to Weapon MG will feel cheated. Maybe they will open up upgrades even for Epic MX owners, but it would need to cost far more than the upgrade for Dragon owners, otherwise it would be better to sell the Epic Dragon, buy a used Epic MX and then upgrade through that, which would be insane.

I dont think Epic-W would be better than MG. It would be step below.

Maybe it's 6K 23.98 only?

If this camera even exists. Again, may be a trade in program for Epic MX to Scarlet-W. They are both 5K cameras after all.

I guess Jarred would have stopped the rumor since then. They are both 5k but different pixel size / sensor size. 25.6mm vs 27,6mm wide.

Obviously different sensor sizes, but still...we have no idea if this is a camera...or a trade in program. I guess we'll find out at NAB!

two things for sure, DSMC2 body and $20K price range,
but i am not letting my precious go unless it'll have higher resolution :)

I guess we'll know in six weeks!

LOL - Jarred will not be able to contain himself (or this secret) for 6 weeks!!!

There'll, no doubt, be other Super secrets that'll drop at NAB... just this one will be early. We should bet on how long before Jarred caves ;)

There was also talk of ditching prores/dnx/transcodes when people were discussing 'an Epic-Dragon in a DSMC2 body'... But if that were the case, I think it'd be cheaper (or the same price) as Scarlet-W (which I doubt). I also highly doubt they'd allow 1.8mags (as that'd be a niche part to manufacturer for a camera that falls mid-level in the line-up).

I doubt they'll ditch Prores. All DSMC2 cameras appear to match - and I couldn't imagine an Epic-W being any different.

This kind of camera makes no sense... who would buy this camera? The Raven and Scarlet is perfect for budget owners and anyone with more finance than that will most likely have enough for the Weapon 6K. I'm trying to look objectively on this and I cannot, from a business standpoint see any viable return on such a device. A trade-in I understand, but a trade-in for Epic MX to a Scarlet-W makes more sense, most likely with less additional payment than the Dragon to Weapon 6k trade-in. A new camera, it will probably be as semi-DOA as the Redray.

I would buy a 6K 23.98 camera in a heartbeat. If its $20K? And does 60fps 5K?

Sure.

We do mostly 6K interviews. So a 6K 23.98 camera would be great as Weapon B and C cams. (like old Scarlet MX days where only did 4K in 23.98).
