  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-W

Hi guys,

What a good news this Epic-W with Helium sensor.

Yesterday I was ready to switch my Dragon to the Epic-W but something "bother" me about the FOV. I did lot of motion in 6k, different FPS and I just looking on the Red crop factor the Dragon Frame 6k vs Epic-W frame 6k, and it's 1.36 crop factor. (tool here : http://www.red.com/tools/crop-factor)

For my use that's a lot and i am afraid to loose the frame quality I have with the Dragon in 6k. For sure I can use a 16mm on the Epic-W in 6k for emulate a 24mm on the Dragon in 6k, but the DOF will not remain the same as it like a "digital zoom".

I don't know if I am alone on this case, but with the Helium sensor quality, I would love to use it, and the DSMC2 is just fantastic.

I wont ask to know if a Epic-W 6k Helium will exist, but if yes, I can sign right now :o)

Keeping the Dragon 6k FOV with new super sensor / body, could be a killer combo for guys like me.

To be clear, I am not complaining about this huge and nice news from yesterday, it's a fantastic opportunities for us to work with these great cameras and Red did a really nice work for this launch !

Hi Mike,

I know its the same framing between the 2, it's just the speed in full frame and keep 6k in my case, that's why I talked about it :)

I got ya, the only way to get a bit more horse power (ergo higher fps) in that FOV is Weapon Helium... or Weapon Dragon 6K.

Yes I know that, but Weapon dragon still dragon sensor, let's see if something appears in 6k helium.

6K Helium will always be the much smaller frame, as Helium is 3.65 micron pixel pitch. It will be the crop factor like E-W to Dragon... so that won't change - the pixel pitch is fixed.

And currently u have either E-W with 275MB/s bandwidth and W-H with 300MB/s bandwidth. Those are the 2 top horses. That is higher bandwidth than Epic Dragon.

So if u want the FOV of S35-ish with Helium, u need 8K on W-H for the highest fps.

Or, for same FOV: Dragon 8K VV and then shoot 6K for highest fps.

Both are the most expensive options.

FOV with Helium can only change with more pixels (--> 7K|8K), which in turn needs more bandwidth, which we don't have. Gotta wait for the next body type, with better processing boards.

Thanks for clarify the technicals points !

It's really more clear for me now, I didn't think about the pixel size and the sensor size.

Does anyone care to share an E-W overcrank high frame rates, well lit, footage? Thanks.

Mine is coming on Wednesday. I plan on testing this so Ill post it when I do.

Question about magnify toggle on the Epic-W...

How quick is the response for magnify? Meaning once you click it, how long until you see the magnification? I was looking at a video, the guy hit magnify, and it took longer than usual.. Thanks!

Hoping the Epic Weapon gets at least 48 fps in 8K... Also the 9:1 is a little high even though we can get away with more at 8k...

I'm just hoping for 60fps in 6.5K (True Super 35mm). For me, 60fps is such a requested frame rate. Would be a shame to not be able to shoot it in Super 35mm FOV.

Not nearly as fast as I'd hoped. There is a noticeable delay as the camera punches in and out.
