  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-W

I don't recall where this was discussed exactly, but I vaguely remember Jarred saying that there may be a small chance that the Epic body may be able to support the next generation sensor.

I remember Jarred saying that too, wich make sense with the mantra obsolessence obsolete, personnaly I don't need prores but when a new sensor and new board poped up for my old body why not..
Anyway we have to remember that in the red ecosysteme things can change.

Is the consensus that this will be an NAB 2016 announcement? I was just about to pull the trigger on a used Epic-Dragon and saw this.

If this camera is going to make the Weapon MG seem obsolete or over priced in comparison it's gonna make a lot of people angry I'm afraid. I don't see where the "large gap" between Scarlet-W and Weapon MG is?

uh. The cost ?

uh. The cost ?
There may be a large price differential between Scarlet-W and Weapon MG, but I don't see much room in the specs to shoehorn another model in between them. One is 5K, the other is 6K...same sensor, same form factor...a few significant differences in compression ratios and processing speeds t justify the extra cost.

But honestly...what do you think this "mythical" Epic-W going to do that one of these two cameras doesn't? Perform as well as a Weapon MG for half the money? I seriously doubt it. Haven't you heard, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

My thoughts, trying to reason this, mixed with some wishful thinking :

I think the major gap is not between Scarlet W, but Between Weapon Magnesium and Weapon CF.

With players like Sony, Panasonic and I presume in the near future the likes of Blackmagic looking into 8K (Panasonic stated that to be their goal, I think, a couple of months ago) I think the next step is to make the 8K Dragon sensor more accessible to the rest of the Red Owners.

The current path to 8K is only through CF Weapon. I imagine this will be the reality for a year or so, which means either one has the CF Weapon and upgrades to the 8K sensor, or buys an of the shelf 8K CF Weapon, which might have a different name.

What is important here is, after this year of 8K exclusivity to the Carbon, which should mean incredible return of investment to all the high end productions invested on the tech, there should be a viable path to the "other" Red Users to this sensor- could be with inferior frame rates, bigger compression, but still market leading , gorgeous, still photography capable, full frame cinema frame rates beauty. And here's were the new, in between CF Weapon and Weapon Magnesium Model could appear:

Either it could be a Scarlet like 8K upgrade path for the Magnesium line, with fewer frame rates and more compression, and an equivalent 8K of the Shelf Magnesium 8K full frame body

Or a new Weapon Magnesium, with the CF Boards in them, without prores. I would seriously consider an upgrade to that, if it meant less 5K or 10K on the price!

Another point to consider is the PRORES. I personally don't care AT ALL for prores since I have the Rocket X and a fine Computer. Would love to have a RED Weapon Magnesium without it that was less expensive and upgradeable to 8k!

These are just lines of thought. There definitely is a space for a different product(s) in the line!

Tom. I don't know what I am talking about to be sure. But the cost difference between Weapon Mg and Scarlet-W is huge. Mega. I don't have any idea what RED HQ is planning...but as I have pointed out before...there was a cost difference between Epic-X and Epic M. The difference in performance? Zero. Weapon Woven and Weapon Forged? Zero....I don't know what RED is planning. But I do know that sometimes people pay a higher price for cameras that don't have higher specs...

That wont happen this time.

RED has tied performance to materials.

Carbon = best
Magnesium = next best
Aluminum = everything else.

Whatever Epic-W is, it wont be as good as Magnesium. Period.

It may not even be 6k. Remember, this was about giving the 5K MX guys some love, not the Epic Dragon guys.

Who knows? This could be a 96fps 5K Epic-W.

Who knows? Maybe it's some early adopter love? (even though that has been put to bed) It's hard to make any definitive statements when it comes to RED because they have surprised us so many times in the past.
Will be interesting to see IF and how it plays out.

David

Jarred has gone dark on the information front. Just wondering if he is maybe in Death Valley with a prototype Epic W shooting the wildflower super bloom?

I hope somebody is because I'm going to need some 6 (8?) k stock footage of that sometime in the future.

My guess is that the era of upgrades/discounts is coming to an end. Seems like there are going to be way too many models out there now to come up with something that is fair for everyone and straight forward to implement.

I'd rather they put their time to developing camera tech. The competition isn't that far behind anymore and to be honest, I don't see (personally) much benefit in upgrading from Epic Dragon to Weapon. Love my Epic Dragon. Unless there's a huge leap in RED tech, I'll be sitting on it for some years to come. Hope those of us sitting on our Epics/Epic Dragons don't get forgotten in the firmware update cycles.

Just some feedback from a customer.

RED one and RED One MX are still supported camera's so I would think that there will be some more improvements over time but the bulk of the new tech will be put into newer hardware.

Then whey even bother getting a Magnesium? This makes no sense. As Tom says, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

my uneducated guess would be magnesium minus prores in aluminum body,
but yeah, we'll see in six weeks!

My understanding is all DMSC2 cameras will share same form/function. ALL of them should have some kind of Prores.

Since the context of the statement was Epic MX holdouts, it could just be a program to trade up to one of the hundreds of Epic Dragon cameras they just took back.

I would be so hap[py if they opened up the upgrades to dragon again. Probably put a upgrade for weapon in at the same time then.
