  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Are the RED electronics lenses going to be primes or zooms?
Last official word 2 years ago was:

Zooms.

15-25 f/2.8 Autofocus
25-100 f/2.8 Autofocus Stabilized [NOTE: ?In recent renderings I believe this has become a 24mm-... maybe?]
70-200 f/2.8 Autofocus Stabilized
300mm f/2.8 Autofocus Stabilized

Andrew, it looks to me like resale values on RED gear are pretty strong. When the time comes, sell your old S and replace it with an M.

If EPIC is anything like normal electronics, there are few to no user replaceable parts inside and the electronics are packed in there like sardines.

D

That would be the better option. But I keep good care of all my gear, and I wonder if it would be cheaper just to have RED pump some more juice into it, instead of getting a whole new brain. I know when the epic was first announced, RED made a big deal of upgrading, and the idea of keeping your same brain but bouncing around between formats/sensors.

Are these expected to be in the same price range as the 17-50?

I would kill for a 15-25 and a 25-100.

Everything I have read has made it pretty clear that all of the accessories are compatible between all of the brains (and therefore only have to be purchased once), but if you want to switch sensors or get more throughput power, you must buy a new brain. This is super logical and convenient in my opinion, and by having all of the other parts attachable to the brain (LCD, battery module, I/O ports, etc.), it keeps the cost of the brains to a much more reasonable level.

Yeah no, I think it was always a system where modularity means each variety of sensor is part of a corresponding brain. In order to move to a different sensor you buy a new brain.

No price has ever been attached to them as far as I know. I'm hoping they'll be in the High-End Canon/Nikon range.

Since the Epic-S has the narrower Scarlet body, there will not be room for the extra boards in the full-size Epic.

I thought that the Epic-S would share now the same body than the full size EPIC. :toetap05:

I second that, is there any current status from Red on these. I have my sites on buying a bunch of Canon lens (and just picked up a 24-70 f2.8) yesterday, but really would love a set of red zooms. I take it these would be for epic and scarlet?

thx

I think Jim said that Epic S will now have the bigger and more rugged Epic body. This along with manufacturing and couple of more boards relates to the slight price increase.

1. We have moved from the less robust Scarlet S35 chassis to the EPIC S35 chassis (like going from the economy car frame to the truck frame). Pro, not prosumer.

The EPIC-S and the EPIC-X/M will have the same body.

Fixed Scarlet for 3D?

Fixed Scarlet for 3D?

I am curious about the focal length of the fixed lens 2/3" Scarlet and whether the lens specifications are locked down? I am hoping for a fairly wide lens as opposed to a longer lens for the possibility of having two fixed lens Scarlets in a 3D rig as opposed to two Epics. The larger questions are whether the Scarlet can be genlocked? The lens it self can be matched with other fixed lens Scarlets? Since there is only 1 Iris, Zoom, and Focus ring, I am hoping that the functionality of each can be controlled electronically somehow and linked to individual controls.

Am I asking too much?

Yes, I found that post. Leaves me wondering about the rationale for the Epic S - it will not be a slimmer and lighter camera any more.
