  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Larger frame doesn't mean people using the format are going for greater DOF. Larger frame size means larger frame size- different lenses, more exposure real estate, different look. It's a great format for shooting if the project demands it.

So, there isn't a 2K record option that uses the full sensor, is that it?

There was a scaled 1080 RGB mode in the original specs for all of the DSMC cameras. RED hasn't said that changed so it is probably still there. Not quite 2k but close.

I hope motion work doesn't move into FF35 arena.

I'm sick and tired of the uber short DOF world.

People need to watch some Kurosawa.

Thankfully the world doesn't have to kowtow to your every whim. ;) Bring on lower noise, higher dynamic range, more resolution and yes, when desired the sexy DOF.

You can always stop down. You can't always open up more. If you want 'normal' DOF whatever that means you can get that. But it's pretty hard to get F1.8 FF35 depth of field on a S35 camera *if* you want it.

Full frame 35mm is the way of the future, IMO.

I ask again because I don't understand everything and don't know if it was already said :

- will the camera be able to shoot 120fps in 3K ?
- if it can shoot in lower resolution than 5K, will it be by reducing the sensor area exposed OR by reducing the pictures resolution inside the camera ?
- can I use it to warm up my coffee ?... Ok... Just kidding...:biggrin5:

To shoot 3K in typical RED fashion it would be windowed (cropped sensor, or reducing the sensor area, whatever you want to call it.
As for 120fps I don't know, maybe 90fps.
Will have to do the math on that one.

Forgive me if this has been posted previously but I can't locate it. How many seconds from power up to record on the Epic-S?

Currently it is 8 seconds on my EPIC-M. It fluctuates between 7 and 10 seconds depending on the firmware build and whether or not it has been optimized. Count on somewhere in this area.

Wow, that's going to make a HUGE difference on set. Awesome.

are there other frame rates available on epic-s at 2k?

I'm sorry if I missed this, but when will there be a way to get in the list for a scarlet or the epic-s?

Thanks!

Many thanks Jim. That really is great news for Documentary Cameramen. Hoping to finally retire my big old 2\3" HD cameras sometime this year. And they all cost over $40000!!!!!
Best Johann

That's a bit of a bummer that you can't get 2K or something around there while using the whole sensor (so as to avoid different lens magnifications and d.o.f. issues...). That makes the higher frame rates you might be able to get with the Epic-S at lower resolutions far less useful (for me anyway), and in scenarios where you don't have the computer power available to pump around 5K...but oh well, I still want it haha!

There is scaled 1080P (or is it 2K?)...
