  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Yes, I found that post. Leaves me wondering about the rationale for the Epic S - it will not be a slimmer and lighter camera any more.

The rationale was to accommodate the board upgrades for HDRx and to build it on the same production line as Epic-X. Probably get it to market sooner that way.

Slimmer then the EPIC-X/M, no. It's the same body.
Lighter, yes. The EPIC-S has less boards.

Hi All.
So looking forward to book the EPIC-S as the EPIC-X will be a bit out of budget for a while..

Just one question - Maybe Jarred can explain better.. Sorry if its a noob question..

I understand many of the "limitations" of Epic-S when compared to Epic-X but will compression ratios actually affect image quality as such.. If we get the same HDRx and 5k what is the main difference?

Thanks a lot..

Depends who you are... to some people lower compression ratios in motion mode means the world.

Don't forget the lower framerates on Epic-S as well.. that is probably going to be the most noticeable limitation to the majority of Epic-S customers.

Yes I guess following quick motion with less compression will give better results but I'm sure Epic-S will do fine following some crazy action. Still an Epic after all... Thanks Jarred - Truly feel honored that you find time to answer many of the questions even though I don't own a Red yet..

I also assume that since this is now in the Epic line it will also be built in the US?

That would actually make me want to buy it even more over a Scarlett.

I'm counting the hours..I can tell you that. I just bought a lens package gearing up for the release.

I hope Epic-S will be at NAB with all the other cameras. This is what I have my eye on the most.

Epic-S, even with the "limitations," is more camera than I need (or can afford sadly).

But 2/3" is just too small. I know people here thing it's a stupid trend, but especially as someone who wants their DSMC to actually be usable for stills, I need more depth of field control. There needs to be another Scarlet.

List Price of the Canon 1DS Mark II was $12,000 when it was first released.

At the time it was a revolutionary stills camera in terms of capability and image quality.

I see no reason whatsoever that an Epic S should cost any less than $12,000.

It's a digital stills AND motion camera so if you look at it that way - it's like you spent $9000 for one of the most capable motion cameras on the planet, and another $3000 for what I presume to be one of the most capable Stills cameras on the planet.

A neat cost saving measure for Epic S people might be if it shipped with a CF card module instead of SSD, and allowed for somewhat limited use of Lexar or Transcend UDMA CF cards under limited compression ratios, or unlimited for "stills"

This idea will probably be put down because of the notion of certified media - but I think it might quiet people who think the body should be cheaper. I certainly don't.

Personally I think 2/3" lenses at 0.95 aperture offer more than shallow enough DOF for 90% of situations but that's just, like, my opinion man.

Dan, I did a little checking of the cost of CF versus SSD media and they actually cost exactly the same per unit of storage. In all but the extreme short term you are so much better off with SSD it's not even funny.

At the time the 1Ds II was released the sensor fab process was much less mature, yields were terrible, and the cost of producing a 36x24 sensor (as opposed to the 24x16 that was in every DSLR to that point beside the also-overpriced 1Ds I) was insane.

The technology has come a long, long way. In today's (or last year's, really) tech, a 5D II drastically, drastically outperforms a 1Ds II and only costs $2400. Except for being 24x16 instead of 36x24, I think you could argue the 7D drastically outperforms a 1Ds II for only $1700 (and is closer in sensor size to the Epic, which is 30x15).

So I don't think the comparison is apt.

But I do totally agree with you that the price is reasonable. But for me it's because of the insane processing power required to handle 15 megapixels in RAW @ 60fps.

Lee, we have to consider all of the other components and research and development that went into the Epic.

Sensor is but one part of the equation.

Custom Asic?

The engineering brain power and man hours that went into the development of every part of this camera is very costly - Red isn't canon (Thank Goodness)

almost done :)

I'm not even getting this camera (I'm planning on buying the Fixed Scarlet), but this is still unbelievably exciting...unless I misunderstood what you meant by "almost done"...in which case I'm severely disappointed. Hehe.
