  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC... ready.

Any word on Epics delivery date? Will it be available this year?

Speaking of footage from the EPIC what post production software will I be able to use for 5K RAW
I use Avid DS working directly from 4K R3D files. I'm currently onlining totally 4 hours, a series of 8 x 30 min programs. The computer in use is a HP z800. I am very satisfied with the handling of DS.

Actually Mac Pro workstations are quite price competitive with PC's IF you compare similar hardware implementations: server grade motherboards, Xeon processors, ECC ram, etc. But they are still limited on graphics card support compared to the PC world.

They are (sorta) when they first come out. Sorta. The big thing is, Apple doesn't change their prices to keep up with the decline in price of similar hardware over the lifecycle of their products. Apple also doesn't provide any sort of roadmap or official timetable with their systems.

I'd say it's the other way around. Any hardware Apple release is to facilitate the purchase of their software. Whether they know it or not, the reason most people buy a mac? To use OSX. Why do they buy an iPhone? To use the App Store. Why an iPod? iTunes. The fact that the hardware is attractive looking and generally well built is a bonus. What apple really excel at (outside of marketing) is building highly polished software ECOSYSTEMS. Their hardware, certainly in terms of components, have been pretty unremarkable (with a few notable exceptions). Their design, of course, is a different story.

In fact, if I could find the quote, I'd point it to you but I'm 100% positive that Jobs himself said a couple of years ago that "Apple is a software company" during a Walt Mossberg and interview. I remember distinctly that it was a double interview with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, that's why it was so remarkable.

Apple still makes most of their money on their hardware markup. iTunes Music Store opened in 2003 after the iPod had been on the market for quite awhile. The first iPhone App SDK was announced in February 2008 after the iPhone was released in June 2007. In fact, it really wasn't until people started jailbreaking their iPhones that Apple decided native apps were a good idea (when the iPhone was first released the big push was web-enabled apps using Mobile Safari)

Apple is not a software company, Apple uses software to sell their high-margin hardware.

Most on-topic thread ever.

oh boy oh boy oh boy!
This would make for THE BEST birthday present (hey, it's mid February)
But Jim for you I am willing to move my birthday date to whenever my Epic-X gets delivered :-)
Congratulations (such a small word compared to what you have achieved but that's all my poor vocabulary can muster...)
Thank you unsung heroes of the RED Army, thank you Jim, Jarred and everyone else!

I have a concern: I find it impossible to read everything that gets posted on reduser. So, I am concerned that I may miss out on my option to upgrade my 2 R1s to Epics.
Is there a way to guarantee that I will not miss out? (Stage 3).
Thanks, this has been bothering me for a long time.
Dave

I think you'll receive an email, precisely for the reason you mentioned

Aside from the email, you could always subscribe to the Recon RSS feed. That way you won't miss any big announcements.
Just go to www.red.com/learn and click on the RSS button (doesn't work in chrome though).

Thanks for this tip! I didn't realize that this was available. I subscribed through the OSX Mail app.

Thanks, I tried that once and didn't get it to work. I suspect they are blocking it at work. I'll have to try it on one of my home computers.

I do get the email notices though. But, I don't remember that they sent out a stage 2 notice. I knew about it only because I read it on reduser. (Just couldn't come up with the money in time.)

I thought I would let this news sink in for a couple days before I posted. However the thread seems to have gone a skew from the initial announcement so it may fall of deaf ears, however....

Congratulations Red Team and their Families! Your dedication to the Epic project has been relentless and a lesson could be taken by all on how a monumental task such as the creation of the Epic can be approached, executed and dreams fulfilled. My hat is off to you all, my admiration and commitment the Red Company unshakable.

My personal thanks to Jim and his development team for bringing the world such technologies. Without your dreams and passion we would not be able to share and be apart of your personal endeavor. Take time to bask in your accomplishment and be sure to take a step back and consider what you have all done....this will change everything.

Thank you.

I have an Epic-X question: one of the elements of being in line for R1 that I really appreciated was knowing where I stood in the queue. I may not have known the delivery date at the outset, but I knew where I stood in the pecking order. Are there plans for a similar "serial number" notification ahead of the Epic-X release (or maybe that was already a part of the deposit confirmation and I just missed it)? Looking forward to pressing that red button...
