  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

I believe timecode does and sound does not. I also am dit'ing an epic shoot this week. I saw earlier someone mentioned doing an epic menu tree, did that ever happen?

This question will probably be answered by 'not in the current firmware', but I remember talk a while back of Redmote buttons 1-4 being configurable as shortcut keys. eg. giving you the ability to change framerate/res/shutterspeed at the touch of a button. Any sign of that functionality yet? I'm sure it's down the list of priorities in the current beta firmware - but it will be a brilliant feature if/when it becomes available.

The buttons can be reprogrammed to quite a few more settings than on the R1. As for what you're looking for specifically [pulling up specific *settings* rather than activating/deactivating conditions], it's not in there yet.

Thanks for the prompt reply Brook. I guess what I was referring to was the ability to assign one or more user profiles to the shortcut keys and load them with one button push. Fingers-crossed that will be doable at some point in the future.

Is it possible for me to get some kind of start/stop button for my tripod handle? Origo or something similar?

Is there a pre-record function on Epic working now?

there is a cable called a "0 lemo" cable made by red. it has three bnc's on one end and a very small lemo on the other. it plugs into the control port and provides connectivity for gen lock - green, timecode jam - yellow, and trigger/gpio - white. i have been told that the pin outs for the r1 DO NOT match those of epic in terms of the triggering device...so back to the drawing board for on/off trigger, please make one, because i can always use one...

Yes this cable is the cable for Stereo, we have shot with it... as of course some major features have... :-)

The dual camera syncing with this cable works well and there are LCD on screen indicators to show you have all three variables locked. It is a nice design.

The LEMO shell size is #00... it's teensy!

Tom, we built some wired remote start/stop buttons for Spider-Man that trigger using that cable. I have all of the voltage information for triggering, but I'm not sure it's mine to give out. Shoot Deanan an email.

Triggering the Epic to start/stop is a different concept than the R1 - I'll investigate throwing some adapter boxes together.

Thanks, I'd love to buy one, if possible, Brook. Shooting wildlife is quite difficult without one.

Quick question: Can I assign one of those two little buttons on the camera-left side of the Epic near the REDCORD button to be Magnify? If so, how?

In the second half of my post #69 on this thread I described my concept of the need for and functionality of a combo unit for electronic mounts and electronic lenses which could be on a front handle if shoulder held or tripod handle if on tripod. Such a unit would provide a zoom rocker switch, and a record button - and hopefully an auto-focus button. Mounting a Redmote Pro out on a tripod handle wouldn't come close to providing the functionality I described in this other unit - for that style of use on a tripod handle the Redmote is too big, has too many buttons, has a rotary switch (rather than rocker), etc.

All mobile hybrid styles of shooting with Epic and Scarlet could very much benefit from the availability of such a unit as I've described. I'm not surprised you mentioned the desire for at least a record switch on the tripod handle for the wildlife shooting you're doing. That's one of the mobile hybrid shooting genres I referred to which could benefit from the unit I described. If you were using the unit with cine lenses and the PL mount only record/stop would be available. If you were using it with electronic mount and electronic lenses, all functions would be available at your right hand finger tips - zoom, record, and AF.

If for some reason Red doesn't make such an accessory, someone else should. There will be a huge market for such a unit among those who shoot with the electronic mounts and electronic lenses.

Is Red's autofocus going to be able to do things like track birds in the sky? At 200mm f/2.8, I was really struggling to hold focus on these fast-moving birds, especially when they were coming right at me. AF for that would be a game-changer.

An answer to that will have to be made when the electronic mounts are available, and AF is tested out with electronic lenses. Red has mentioned AF tracking on previous threads. For some of the fast moving objects, people, and animals I track in my work - accurate AF tracking would indeed be a "game changer". Stills photographers of sports and wildlife routinely use AF for accurate focus in multi-frame bursts while tracking objects, people, and animals. If the same capability is available with Epic and Scarlet when using electronic mounts and electronic lenses, for motion work and stills work (at up to 120 fps), then indeed we'll have an incredible tool in our hands for those kinds of shots :)

Of the three kinds of electronic mounts and electronic lenses that will be usable on Epic and Scarlet (Canon, Nikon, Red), I'd guess the lens type which will "talk" the best with the mount and camera, and have the best motors, will be the Red mount and the new Red Electronic Lenses.

In the type of shot you mentioned - tracking and focusing on objects coming right at you - using electronic lenses on electronic mounts, with a unit on the tripod handle that has zoom rocker, AF, and record, would be an unbelievably useful tool.

When shooting wildlife from a tripod with Red One I've frequently used an Origo - at least that gave me record/stop at my fingertips. I've shot a ton of wildlife footage over the years with B4 2/3" cameras, with a servozoom unit (zoom rocker + record) on the tripod handle. It makes shooting moving objects like that much easier!

Interesting times ahead Tom...

Handle mounted remote

Can't tell you how great it is to hear some heavyweight non-studio shooters making this request. Hopefully it will also be compatible with Scarlet Fixed and maybe even ready by the time it's released. Tracking BIF's with the Fixed touchscreen AF will be quite a test. Not my genre professionally, but could be fun and make some great b-roll.

I started a thread some time ago with the hope that if enough interest were expressed RED or a third party would develop such a product.

RED SuperGrip for EPIC?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I totally see the need for this for EPIC and what I believe is the perfect documentary, verite, reality, indy cam, RED's Scarlet.

Thanks Robert...

I'm very familiar with the early Red Super Grip concepts. As Mike Curtis mentioned in that 2007 post in his blog posting, the Super Grip didn't have plans for a rocker zoom switch, and would be designed for use with cine lenses and external lens motors - nothing of which really benefits hybrid and EFP style shooting.

I've been suggesting a hand held and tripod handle unit for record for Red One since early 2006, here on Red User and elsewhere.

I've also been suggesting the combo unit I described in this thread since Epic and Scarlet were first announced. It differs from those original Super Grip concepts of Red in that my suggested unit is designed for use with electronic mounts and electronic lenses, zooms using the interface between camera, mount and lens, has a zoom rocker switch, and has AF control. About the only feature that Super Grip concept and my suggested unit have in common is a record button.

The hybrid and mobile industry dwarfs to cine industry in terms of number of productions per year and sheer volume of camera equipment purchased each year. Epic and Scarlet have extensive hybrid and EFP features and will be used widely in those styles of production. The entity that makes a unit like I've described for use with Epic and Scarlet will sell a ton of them.

I agree Steve, just wanting to keep the dialogue going about this type of control. A rocker is totally needed, especially for electronic lenses.

I mentioned the SuperGrip only to perhaps rekindle interest in some type of control for ENG/EFP style shooters And if RED takes another look at the SuperGrip I hope they carefully consider how it would be used, and take your real world feedback seriously.

Glad to see your carrying the flag on this one, as your opinion has much more influence than a no-name shooter like me.
