  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC production...

few weeks till NAB... it's kind of like the curtain coming up right before the big concert...
think of it that way...
when it comes up... it's going to be the wickedest most crazy concert of all time and in every good way possible...
It's all this anxiety and longing to actually hold something this powerful for so long I guess that's got people worked up...but given the test shoots and from what Greg said in the Q&A thread that its able to replace my 7D as a pick up and go cam (need to find the right pick up and go lens)
The wait till the reveal is going to be fun...

I'd say if RED had a store...it's almost like all those people I saw coming out with an iPad on launch day with massive smiles on their face after weeks of waiting...
considering the pics of the M owners, I'm not far off, love to see the first X owners

We are in the process of moving EPIC production from Stage 6 at RED Studios Hollywood to the permanent location in Irvine.

There's something naturally magnificent about people who devote their lives to building things, but in this case it's building a great American motion picture camera. I mean, not to be all nationalistic and obviously you have people from all over the world contributing to the Red, but it's pretty cool that you're up on the big board next to Kodak, Mitchell, Photo-Sonics, Beckman and Whitley, Bach Auricon, Berndt-Maurer and the like.

It's a little sad to see production leave Hollywood, but Irvine's close enough. :thumbup1:

Good luck with this next phase. It's obviously been quite a hike. Nice to see it happening. Of course you're probably neck-deep in planning the next big rollout by now. :patriot:

I never said anything about resenting anything. I don't like it when other Redusers simplify others situations into their own world view. Everyone values a dollar differently. Everyone has different types of markets they're targeting. These delays can affect someone on a minor scale or a major scale depending on their situation. It's presumptuous to think otherwise.

Bad choice of words, didn't mean to offend. Post edited.

The reason why some people are as anxious as ever is because we all love our current red cameras and every single one of us who does not own an epic of any kind sees images and videos of the epic-m all over the internet and salivate all over our keyboards. This camera looks so amazing. The day it arrives and I can start using it will be equivalent to a thousand childhood christmases. I'm insanely excited. My number is in the 5000's and I am in Stage 2, so I have a sneaking suspicion I won't be getting my cam for a while. My only question at this point would actually be, will stage 2 users be serviced first? Will we be the first ones to get epic-x's? Is there any way that you guys could release how many people are enrolled in the program?

Trust me... we don't delight in making our customers squirm. Shipping as many EPICs out as quickly as possible is our 1st goal. The obstacles on this project have been insane. Now we have had a few more added recently with Japan. Without explaining (again) the difficulty of this project or the complexity of what this entails, I guess you are just going to have to trust the decisions we make and that there are good reasons, as we see it, for what we are doing. I understand the frustration of delays more than anyone on this planet.

That's more than a good enough explanation for me... Japan got its ass kicked and people need to get some perspective... after 2 natural disasters they are now facing an even worse man-made disaster with those spent fuels rods melting down. My life is great, I can wait for a camera.

I'm frankly amazed you can find the time to stop in here, but it is appreciated. Most are not second guessing your decisions, just chatting while we wait.

2 Epic M Cameras Working in Miami today. One on a Supertechno

2 Epic M Cameras Working in Miami today. One on a Supertechno

Indeed Epic M is out in the field working.

I'm on a closed set in Miami right now and there are two Epic M cameras working. I'd care to guess that these are the very first Epics to be in Florida. One is working on my Scorpio 23' Telescopic Camera Crane (aka Technocrane).

This first AC was kind enough to pull the camera into the parking lot so that we could get a couple of shots of it & double check our balance on the crane. No pics or video on set.

Second row of pics in my gallery...

I actually work at a design firm and consultancy that can crank out a few working prototypes at a very high cost to our clients, but whenever there is talk of cranking hundreds if not thousands overnight very very precisely (i.e camera and sensors) we're talking assembly lines with tooling and fixtures in place (things a hundred hands can't ever accomplish). Johnathon Ive says it much better here (sometimes most of the time is not even about designing the object itself but its fixtures):

My question is this, when the Red One first shipped in the very beginning, they were sending out machined parts for some of the components because the production mills weren't in full force yet. Why didn't Red just call the Epic-Ms, Epic-Xs and start shipping these out in small quantities rather than increase the overall cost for the package? As a Stage-2 customer with no end in sight, I'm in a little pain right now while I watch others get their Epic-Ms and hear about how Red will deliver 250 more Epic-Ms before NAB. I love Red's imagery but am starting to get really stressed out over these delivery dates. I email Red every week about the status of my BombEVF and am told within a few weeks to a month away.

I was wondering where the factory would be. Given the location I'm wondering if this is a "Swords into Ploughshares" moment.

C'mon Jim, how about a few verses of Kumbaya?

Everybody! Kumbaya ... :grouphug:

I'm curious... if I wanted to purchase an Epic as soon as possible (M or X) and have not been a previous Red owner, what sort of place-in-line factors can I anticipate? I've been thinking about it since I shot with one 2 weeks ago and can't really think of a reason why I shouldn't buy one, especially with the volume of R1 rentals I have been generating in the past.

If this is something immediately doable, feel free to contact me through the PM system.

:-)

Hey Jim, it's cool production is moving to Irvine ... nice little city, I think it was voted safest in America at one point. Spent a lot of time as a child there and still have family there every time I come back to Cali. Good luck and glad you are keeping the business in the US/SoCal .....

We trust you!
i for one have already accepted that my stage 2 will only be coming in some months time...:( but that is ok, because I know it will come and that in a few months time the firmware will be much more advanced, as will the software also, and most probably the Rocket will also be fully functional. I am just wondering if the RED RAY will be too...and if that is one of the big NAB surprises....
:cheers2:

You will need to kill a Stage 2 owner, and assume his or her identity. Otherwise, next fall looks like when in place orders will clear.;)

I think you should just call RED and say you want to be on the waiting list for an EPIC-M. That could be much faster than waiting in line for an EPIC-X, which looks like might be close to the end of this year if you place an order at NAB this year. Jim to provide more details before NAB on ordering X's if your not an existing customer. Of course, an M is like double the price of an X. Maybe someone will PM you with a deal, but I doubt it .

Completely wrong info... EPIC-M are going to ship 1st. But EPIC-X are only on a slight delay. Order by NAB and receive by end of summer if you aren't Stage 2 or 3. If you are... earlier.

Of course, an M is like double the price of an X. Maybe someone will PM you with a deal, but I doubt it .

I actually wonder if this is true, since the M also includes a lot of accessories that you'll need to purchase separately if you buy the X. If my memory serves, M includes a BOMB EVF ($3,000-odd), REDMote ($500), LCD ($1,800), four 128G SSDs ($999 each or $4,000) the SSD adapter ($1,500), the Pelican Case with custom cutouts, and a few other goodies.

So if the X is $28,000, adding this roughly $10k worth of accessories is $38k. The EPIC-M package is $58k. So you are paying about 50% more, not 100% more, for your EPIC-M. If you consider what a point of pride it is for people to have a M, it's pretty understandable why it's flying off the shelves. Heck, if I had unlimited money I'd probably buy one :).

It probably is 100% or more premium for current RED ONE owners, but for new customers it's a surprisingly good deal considering the custom, hand-built nature of the product. An Aston Martin is basically a hand-built Jaguar, and yet you can get a Jaguar for $50k and an Aston for $200k.

Compared to that, EPIC-M actually looks like something of a deal!

On the other hand, I'm not sure if people who have never bought a RED before would be allowed to buy EPIC-M in the first place. It sounds like the qualifications are just that the prospective purchaser understands the camera is not finished. So if I inherited big bucks tomorrow or won the lottery or something, in theory I could buy an EPIC-M, although I probably wouldn't get it until there were already EPIC-Xs floating around.
