  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC production...

For what it is (arguably better than a Panaflex), even the Epic-M is way, way, way underpriced. I'm sure Jim knows better than most of us what a supply/demand curve is, but to all our benefit, he chooses to ignore them.

RED is doing the exact opposite of ignoring supply/demand. By pricing the cameras low enough to considerably expand their market, they open up the possibility for huge revenues on RED accessories. They could give away the cameras (which is basically what they are doing with stage 2 and 3 epics) in order to sell more lenses, matte boxes, storage etc to a vastly larger user base, for which the profit margins are huge (way larger than the cameras). Red wouldn't be nearly as successful if they priced themselves out of every market but big budget rental shops.

It's a smart model, and much appreciated for small time independent filmmakers :)
I can't wait for Epic-S!
(Wouldn't feel right if my first reduser post didn't have some fan boy praise for RED!)

Steve, I think you were just rushing to make a quick point about the phenomenally low pricing, which we all agree with of course, but it bears clarifying that demand is a curve. When you lower the price, the effective demand goes up. The trick is to find the best combination. What Jim chooses to ignore is the daunting effort associated with massive-scale production. But he's been there, done that. We will benefit from lower prices, and he will earn his paycheck through ballsy action, and hard work.

I can't wait for Epic-S!
