  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic not switching over to Redvolt when Vmount pulled?

@Peter - the only workaround I found was that you could let the brick die "naturally" (i.e. run it until it falls below 11.5V), and the camera would switch correctly. Not sure if this is great for your bricks longevity though.

Definitely file a support ticket, particularly if you're seeing it with a Red-branded battery plate. One of the obstacles to getting this nailed so far has been that there have been third-party products involved.

Both of my Epic cameras have this issue with the same side handle. Hopefully it's not an hardware issue.

I have noticed that there is typically a lot of electrical noise that is generated when a battery is directly removed from the battery mount. If you unplug the lemo connector from the camera first then remove the v-mount battery it seems to be more reliable at switching over the the side handle.

@Mitch - I did file a ticket with RED. I haven't tried letting the battery die but will give that a shot. I'll also try Curt's suggestion about pulling the Lemo first. Not really a fix, but I'll take the work around if I need to. I hope that RED does get back to me soon since I am using all RED branded gear and still having this problem. The camera now also dies consistently when I boot it from the red volt in the side handle and add a red brick while the camera is powered up. I am having no issue what so ever with swapping out the red volt in the side handle.

Also happening with my Scarlet.
I am on version 2.08 and an Anton Bauer epic Lemo plate.
Also happens if I am using AC power.
Pull the Lemo and shutdown. No auto restart.
I contacted tech support and they say they have no problem hot swapping.
Strange some people have success and others do not.

Same issues as you on my Scarlet. I am using AB Epic Lemo Plate and it's not switching to Sidehandle. I am also concerned about the performance of Redvolt with the sidehandle and 5' touch LCD(without Bomb EVF). I will time it in Record and standby mode and update this post.

For now I will go ahead and file a support ticket to get the switch from AB to Redvolt fixed.

Same with a rented Epic-M build 2.0.5.

The power display on LCD seems to jump constantly between Sidehandle (SH) and V-mount AB Dionic battery via Lemo (DC) when V-mount drops to 11.5V.

Wonder if the switch over is dithering at the threshold set, and maybe need to have a dual threshold so that once it switches it stays switched until a new battery with clearly higher voltage is reconnected.

Hey all. I was shooting a commercial with AC and had a charged REDVOLT inside the side handle just in case. Midway into a recording an extra stepped on the switch of the power bar where my Scarlet-X AC was plugged into and turned it off. Unfortunately, the Scarlet-X died immediately; the REDVOLT did NOT kick in as expected.

This is very disturbing to me. Is this the way it should work??

I've had mostly good luck with this up until a recent job with two Epic-xs both on 2.0.5. One would switch over to side handle redvolt fine but the other didn't. I messed around a bit and ended up swapping out one side handle for the other on both cameras. Get this, both worked fine. However, just out of curiosity, I swapped the side handles back so the side handles were married to their original camera and the same camera that had the issue before had the same issue--camera powers down improperly. Swapped side handles back for the job and didn't have an issue. Only a 1 day shoot but all good. Go figure. Terminals and all that looked fine.

I just tested this with a Scarlet running 2.0.5 using the Swit V-mount and GMP Li160S-R batteries. I could not keep the Scarlet powered on when the v-mount was pulled.

I tried booting with just the redvolt and attaching the v-mount after powering on and the Scarlet still shut down after v-mount battery was ejected or unplugged.

Has any Scarlet owner successfully done this? If so, what firmware and batteries are you using?

Update on Side handle issue:

I sent my log file to Red about the hot swap issue, and it not working with my Scarlet-X.
They want me to send brain and sidehandle in for repair. I have 3 weeks of paid gigs to work through, so I probably won't for at least a month.
Anyone else have any news?

was trying with different batteries (Generic and Red bricks) sometimes when I pulled out a battery the camera stayed on sidehandle, the next time ONTHE SAME battery I pull it out - it shuts down. Could not track the logic, definitely a firmware bug.

Also having this problem on my EpicX with Viewfactor IDX plate and V-mounts, where I normally switch V-locks using the Redvolt as a hot swap this stopped working yesterday on build 2.0.5. It worked again today but has become inconstant since upgrading to 2.0.5. Since it was rock solid before (on build 1.7.10) I do believe it's a firmware issues that can get sorted out, as long as it is prioritized as a bug.

I am having this issue. The camera shuts down and restarts anytime you unplug or plug in either the lemo or the brick. Inserting or removing the revolt into the side handle does not shut the camera down. I am using all RED cables, plates, and batteries. Running 2.0.8. Both batteries are recognized in the power menu.

I REALLY HOPE this is firmware fixable...

I filed a support ticket and sent in a log file. RED has asked me to send in the side handle but (luckily) not the brain. I'm going to go ahead and do it. Will let you guys know how it works out.

I got the same request from Red. I would love to know how that goes for you.

I am having the same issue and filed a ticket. I am going to go back to firmware 2.0.5 to see if this makes a difference, but not optimistic.
Has anyone resolved this issue by sending in their side handle to RED? Did that fix the problem?
