DSMC Accessories

Jarred,

How did I miss this?
This type of instructional/explanatory video is really helpful. Nice job.
Please expand and do many, many more.
BTW, cool jet....

It's part of the Clutch. Used to hold the shoulder pads in place. Probably other uses will be revealed as more accessories are

I don't get these QR plates.

If I understand the video correctly the QR version clamps to a dovetail which you then screw into your tripod plate, while the bolt-directly-to-tripod-plate version skips this unnecessary center-of-gravity raiser (and extra potential failure point) but lacks rail support.

you can add the universal mounts to the bolt on...asfaik
working with a dovetail is great if you want to switch from head to shoulder WITH all the gear attached to rods like FF and MB.

@Lee, the QR plates serve the same purpose as most any other camera baseplates in the industry. They allow the camera to attach to an industry-standard mounting and provide the ability to attach bottom rods at the proper distance from optical center. If you want to use Arriflex standard 15mm offset or 19mm studio rods on your camera, you need a proper baseplate. This goes for the RED One, now EPIC and most every other camera out there. If you don't have need for bottom rods and will always be mounting to the same tripod, then go ahead and mount your EPIC right to the tripod plate and be done. RED is selling both a bolt-on and a dovetail style QR plate. Both can take universal mount attachments for rods. The quick plate that bolts to the bottom of the camera itself (and allows attachment to the QR plate) is very thin. RED, and others like Brook, will be offering a thicker version of this plate that will incorporate 15mm light-weight (60mm spaced) rod support. That way, you will be able to mount and un-mount your camera from the QR plate and take the 15mm lightweight rods with you.

As for attaching to the dovetail... The Arri style dovetail is pretty much standard in the industry. It allows you to have the dovetail on each of your camera supports -- tripod, dolly, crane, etc.. Quickly re-mount your camera without having to mess with screws. Multiple dovetails are going to be cheaper than multiple bolt-on QR plates. The reason for the sliding dovetail is so you can also have the ability to slide your camera rig fore and aft on the dovetail to better balance or improve the ergonomics of your configuration. Some camera heads have integrated sliding plates, but rarely do these have enough range of travel. Often they are handy to be used in conjunction with a dovetail plate to get the amount of offset you may need for a large zoom.

Sorry to sound like a complete dunce... but what do you do with this bracket,

What's it hold?.. I can see it hangs of a 19mm rod.. but?????

Somebody...

Let's you attach a rosette mount point to rods. Or lets you mount a rod perpendicular to a rosette mounting point. So you can attach Arri style rosette accessories, handles, etc.. do your rods. Or you can put one of these on the front of your EPIC top handle and run a rod parallel with the image plane -- use it to mount cinetape, mics, other stuff. It's just another way to mount more crap on your camera.

So you're saying people buy a bunch of these dovetails and screw them onto the plates of their tripod heads (and whatever else)? That makes complete sense. I was confused because I thought the dovetail REPLACED the tripod plate if you had the right kind of head (which I don't).

I watched the video again to make sure I didn't misunderstand. First words out of his mouth in the video are "Now, the bolt-on QR is not rail compatible"

then i have the same questionmarks like you ;)
still mode friendly plate ?
or simply for people not using rods?

There is a version of the QR plate that goes on the camera coming that has holes to screw in the 15mm or 19mm universal adapter... so you can QR the camera and rods etc.

Not sure if this is it, but maybe...

you mean like this...

Got ya.

Jarred stopped by the OConnor booth today at Cinegear with his wife (great to meet her BTW.)

Everyone keep up the good work…the Art of Cinema (at its essence) is the greatest beneficiary of the ever expanding cumulative knowledge base we all have embraced.

Yes the first of the videos went up last night, should be on RED.COM in the learn section next week.

For now, you can watch the 1080p version here:
