Hello All,

Here is another clip we shot on the red for the All American Rejects.

Its a pretty simple performance clip. We shot it about a month ago in toronto...

We had some terrible data problems on this job...a lot of ruined takes, crazy pixelated frames and data corruption...you could play the video in red cine but it just looked like hell. Anyway, we managed to pull it together minus the bad takes.

Rich,

Totally awesome. Sometimes when watching I can't help but wonder if a look with deep blacks would be better, but there's no doubt what you've done is beyond great.

More importantly, concept is very, very cool as well.

I had an Against Me video last year with an awful lot of dropped frames, and Green Day more recently with even more. At least they can be cut around!

Hey Rich,

Great looking stuff. Loved the flares - did you guys end up using streak filters to get those effects? It really made it feel bigger than your typical music video.

Rich, stuff looks beautiful! Love the colors!

Great job man!

hey thanks guys

the back wall was led par cans...they are the rig that the band uses on their stage shows...so it was pre-programed...which saved us a bunch.

we didnt use a streak filter because you can always see the streaks in the glass even when there is no lens flare...we did something a little funkier.

nate, we tried some deeper blacks...but it sorta ate into the flares and also killed some of the depth...so i let it go a little more flat. Dave Hussey over at CO3 did the color correct...he is a rock star.

The lens flare is interesting I too would like to know how this is possible without a filter. I'm assuming color correction in Final Cut's Color application.

Hussey probably don't roll with Color :-)

....but if he did it'd be awesome.

Rich, was he working from R3Ds or like 10bit DPXs? Do you know?

I guess Marshall Plante/TheSyndicate is ok with working from Color from what I hear, which I'd like to take advantage of soon.

No, Hussey doesn't roll with color...he has a new setup in his bay that will load up dpx files though. It will be sweet when he is able to pull direct from R3D...but for now dpx is fine.

yeah, the cool flare with no filter is a neat little trick. if you figure it out, let me know. ;p

florian, thats what we did...we used a piece of monofilament (i imagine fishing wire would work as well).

the guys cut a piece of cardboard in a circular shape that fits INTO the red where the lens attaches....they cut a square hole in the cardboard and glued the string across the center....this basicly suspends it in the center behind the lens.

the cardboard piece with fishing wire fit into the camera and stayed there the whole shoot.

very cool! thanks for sharing. I've always wondered if that was possible. It looks like if you're doing it behind the lens you don't have to arrange it in the diagonal pattern, something that has always puzzled me about the streak filter...

(patting myself on the back for detective skills...)
